UpStage Underground, a division of the UpStage Players theatre group, designed for young adult actors aged 13-18, will be holding auditions for the organization's 8th Annual Summer Show on Thursday, May 29th. The auditions will take place at the North Collinwood Salvation Army (17625 Grovewood in Cleveland ) from 6:00-9:00 p.m. This year's collection of one-act PG-13 play performances is entitled: "No Autographs Please: A Rock-N-Roll Series."

Actors who wish to audition are asked to come prepared to recite a one to two-minute monologue and bring with them a $5 copying charge. Participants must also be available for mandatory rehearsals on May 31, June 25 and July 28. Performances will take place at different venues throughout the Cleveland area on July 24-27. For more information concerning the auditions and performances, please e-mail upstageunderground at yahoo.com or call (216) 374-6366.

The actors perform an outdoor series of edgier and lesser-known one-act plays. Each year, UpStage Underground enlists 6-8 directors to maximize creativity, instead of having only one director and one inspired vision. Once the directors gain some experience, they mentor and foster growth in a new generation of directors.

In the past, the UpStage Underground directors have chosen plays from Brad Slaight and David Ives, as well as many other acclaimed playwrights.

This exciting show lasts about two hours and consists of at least 6 unique one-act plays. The plays are performed several times in one weekend, sometimes 3 different locations a day! There are also encore performances for special events or as a part of an educational experience for younger actors.

By leaving elaborate sets and stages behind, UpStage Underground has the flexibility to go anywhere. The organization's actors can focus on developing characters and acting skills without spending time creating complicated props and costumes.

UpStage Underground actors are responsible young adults who give up time at swimming pools and summer jobs to dedicate themselves to rehearsing and performing, as well as adding experience to their acting skills. By the end of summer, they have faced many challenges from their directors and have pushed themselves to new heights as artists. Most importantly, they have created something fun and exciting, and have shared this experience, as well as themselves, with a wide array of audiences that they might not have otherwise encountered.
