*Coach House Theatre gets 'Nerd'-y May 22 -- June 14*

 

    Akron's Coach House Theatre concludes its fantastic 2007-2008 season
    with /The Nerd/, a comedy written by Larry Shue (/The Foreigner/).
    The show runs for four weekends, May 22 to June 14.

    Now an aspiring young architect in Terre Haute, Indiana, Willum
    Cubbert (Dan Sekanic) has often told his friends about the debt he
    owes to Rick Steadman (Greg Bealer), a fellow ex-GI whom he has
    never met but who saved his life after he was seriously wounded in
    Vietnam. He has written to Rick to say that, as long as he is alive,
    "you will have somebody on Earth who will do anything for you"---so
    Willum is delighted when Rick shows up unexpectedly at his apartment
    on the night of his thirty-fourth birthday party. But his delight
    soon fades as it becomes apparent that Rick is a hopeless "nerd"---a
    bumbling oaf with no social sense, little intelligence and less
    tact. And Rick stays on and on, his continued presence among Willum
    and his friends leading to one uproarious incident after another,
    until the normally placid Willum finds himself contemplating
    violence---a dire development which, happily, is staved off by the
    surprising ending of the play.

    Directing this production is Alex J. Nine, who previously helmed our
    production of Neil Simon's /Broadway Bound/ in 2005. Alex is
    well-known to Coach House audiences for his many appearances on our
    stage, including /Witness for the Prosecution, Ten Little Indians,
    Chapter Two, 6 RMS RVR VU/ and /Hamlet/. A lifelong native of Akron
    and graduate of the University of Akron, Alex works regularly with
    Mysteries by Moushey, The Largely Literary Theatre Company and the
    Ohio Shakespeare Festival.  

    /The Nerd/ will be presented Thursday, May 22 through Saturday, June
    14, 2008. Curtain times are Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m.,
    with Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m. The house opens a half hour before
    the show, and the box office opens one hour before the show. Coach
    House Theatre is located at 732 W. Exchange Street, in Akron, next
    to the Akron Woman's City Club. Tickets for /The Nerd/ are on sale
