Kent Stage Update

A Beatle comes to Kent (Ohio)
Plus, a Hollie, Larry Keel, The Original Strawbs, & Riders In The Sky

Pete Best & The Pete Best Band, Terry Sylvester, (formerly of The Hollies,)  The Return
Friday, May 30 -- 8:00 PM
The Pete Best Band,  featuring the original drummer of The Beatles, Pete Best, captures the sound of the Beatles in their formative years - the early years for many 'was' The Beatles. John Lennon summed this up well - "We were at our best when we were playing in the dance halls of Liverpool and Hamburg. The world never saw that."

Terry Sylvester came to international fame in the unenviable position of succeeding Graham Nash as a member of the Hollies. A gifted singer and a talented musician, he fared well in the group for a dozen years, during which they cut three of their biggest hits and some of their best albums.  "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother, Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress, All I Need is the Air That I Breath."

The captivating, fun, exciting spirit that came to be known as "Beatlemania" is alive again in The Return — the world's most authentic and entertaining Beatles tribute band. These four lads, all in their early to mid-twenties, have carefully and skillfully recreated the Beatles experience by not only performing all the great songs of the original four, but also by sporting the same suits, boots, mop-tops, musical instruments, and gear. The Return make it possible for music fans from every generation to experience the same thrilling rush felt by fans who were fortunate enough to attend an actual Beatles concert in the early sixties.

LARRY KEEL & THE NATURAL BRIDGE
Thursday, June 5 -- 8:00 PM
Batten down the hatches or prepare to be blown away in the perfect storm, a raging musical maelstrom of swirling innovations. The extended forecast is calling for tonal tornadoes of epic proportions made more dangerous by syncopated sound cyclones scattered with bursts of colossal chord changes and intermittent harmonies. For those in the direct path of this vast vortex of energy, expect to be further battered by sonic tsunamis fed by raging rhythms. Keel advisories will remain in effect until after the second set.
The audience at a Larry Keel performance is not simply being entertained; instead, they are having their hearts and brains happily steamed in a boiling cauldron of blazing instrumentation and BRAND NEW original sounds. Driven jamming is linked in flawless cohesion to brilliant and multiple variations—this band is anything but ordinary! A band of kindred spirits who share a common musical vision, Larry Keel and Natural Bridge is: the beautiful, cheerful steady backbone-Jenny Keel (bass fiddle, vocals), the atomic, off the chain fireball-Mark Schimick (mandolin, vocals), the charming, crescendo pickin’ stud-Jason Flournoy (banjo, vocals), and, of course, the MAD, marquee headlining maestro-Larry Keel (guitar, vocals).

THE ORIGINAL STRAWBS
Friday, June 13 -- 8:00 PM
One of the better British progressive bands of the early '70s, the Strawbs differed from their more successful compatriots -- the Moody Blues, King Crimson, Pink Floyd -- principally in that their sound originated in English folk music, rather than rock.
As of 2007, Strawbs are still recording and touring in two formats: the acoustic format comprising Cousins, Lambert and Cronk and also as the entirely original "Hero and Heroine/Ghosts" line-up of the electric band from 1974 - Cousins, Lambert, Cronk, Coombes and Hawken.

RIDER IN THE SKY
Saturday, June 28 -- 8:00 PM
Riders In The Sky are truly exceptional. By definition, empirical data, and critical acclaim, they stand “hats & shoulders” above the rest of the purveyors of C & W – “Comedy & Western!” For thirty years Riders In The Sky have been keepers of the flame passed on by the Sons of the Pioneers, Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, reviving and revitalizing the genre. And while remaining true to the integrity of Western music, they have themselves become modern-day icons by branding the genre with their own legendary wacky humor and way-out Western wit, and all along encouraging buckaroos and buckarettes to live life "The Cowboy Way!"
Riders In The Sky are exceptional not just in the sense that their music is of superlative standards (they are the ONLY exclusively Western artist to have won a Grammy, and Riders have won two), but by the fact that their accomplishments are an exception to the rule as well.
