Program Director of Cultural Arts Education and Outreach

 

Announcement

 

The historic Karamu House Performing Arts Center, a regional theatre and
community center in Cleveland, Ohio with a $2 million annual operating
budget, is seeking an individual to fill the newly created position of
Program Director of Cultural Arts Education and Outreach.

 

Job Summary

 

The Program Director of Cultural Arts Education and Outreach will be part of
the Karamu House senior leadership team, reporting to the Executive Director
and accountable to the Artistic Director, for the quality and artistic
standards of educational theatrical programs.  The Program Director will be
responsible for the effective operation and outcomes documentation of three
key program areas:  in-house cultural arts education programs for youth and
adults; outreach programs and workshops; and the implementation and
scheduling of traveling theatrical productions.  The Program Director will
hire, develop and evaluate one full-time associate program manager and a
varying number of education outreach contracted employees.



Responsibilities

 

Administrative Management

*         Plan, coordinate and implement cultural arts and education
programs.

Examples of these programs include:  Saturday youth education programs; an
after-school program; evening teen/adult education programs; mini-workshops;
early childhood workshops/classes and special projects.

*         Plan, coordinate and implement Theatre Outreach Performance Series
(TOPS) operations, including developing new business, booking and scheduling
of in-house and touring performances and workshops.

*         Manage all aspects of recruiting, hiring, training and evaluation
of program personnel in consultation with the Executive Director, the
Artistic Director and the Human Resource Department.

*         Act as liaison between Executive Offices and resident interest
groups, i.e. Karamu Golden Agers, Karamu Camera Guild and Karamu Most
Experience Adults.

*         Documentation and evaluation of program activities.

*         Submission of administrative and outcome measurement reports to
Executive Director.

*         Plan and administer budgets for program areas in consultation with
Executive Director 

and Fiscal Office.

*         Conduct staff departmental meetings.

*         Attend all senior management meetings.

*         Provide institutional support as needed.

 

Program Development and Management

*         Plan, develop, coordinate and implement curriculum for all
workshops/classes and

outreach programs.

*         Plan, coordinate and implement master classes/lecture
demonstrations by visiting artists and other professionals.

*         Provide artistic direction of TOPS season in collaboration with
the Artistic Director and direct all TOPS productions.

*         Research, compile and approve education packets for TOPS
performances and workshops.

*         Prepare and compile materials used by TOPS performers/instructors.

*         Coordinate and implement cooperative projects with schools,
colleges, universities and other community institutions.

*         Maintain all records and documentation of the project which
includes providing

scripts of performances prior to any presentation of the performances or
workshops.

 

Marketing/Community Relations

*         Develop and implement a marketing strategy for CAE and TOPS
programs in conjunction with Marketing Director to increase student
enrollment and audience development.

*         Promote Education programs and TOPS performances/workshops which
include marketing campaigns to schools, communications to potential clients,
creating informational flyers,

brochures and press releases.

*         Develop and nurture relationships will all segments of the
community. 

*         Represent Karamu House, Inc. at educational and community
functions.

 

Qualifications

*         Bachelor's degree in education, business, fine arts or related
field

*         Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills

*         Ability to plan, develop and implement programming and ideas

*         Administrative and supervisory experience

*         Three to five years of arts management experience in the field of
theatre arts and education 

*         A collaborative spirit and proven ability to create and manage
partnerships

*         An understanding of the importance of theatre in formal and
informal education arenas

*         A strong belief in the arts as a vital part of community and of
society

*         Budget preparation and control

 

 

About Karamu House

 

Mission Statement:  Karamu House is a not-for-profit community-based arts
and educational organization designed to encourage and support the
preservation, celebration and evolution of African-American culture and
provide a vehicle for social, economic and educational development.  About
Karamu House:  Located in Cleveland's Fairfax neighborhood, Karamu House is
the oldest African-American theater in the United States.  Founded in 1915,
it has been the launching site for such diverse actors and playwrights as
Langston Hughes, Ruby Dee, Robert Guillaume, and countless others.  In
addition to its theater, Karamu runs a day care facility and cultural arts
classes for all age groups.
