About the show
Picnic is a Pulitzer prize winning play which was made into a classic
film starring William Holden and Kim Novak. The play was one of the
first explorations of teen angst in 1950's American culture. Picnic
deals with society's expectations vs. what your true desires are. The
struggle is paralleled in both the world of the teenager as well as the
grown ups who don't seem to have it any more together when you look
beyond the surface. The basic story revolves around two sisters: The
Beauty Queen and the Tom Boy, Mr. Right, and the arrival of his loser
flunked-out Heart Throb frat brother who storms into town. The adult
story line also faces parental expectations and pressure - as well as
the fear and stigmatism of becoming a spinster in 1950's America. A
great play that will transfer beautifully to outdoor performance.
Unlike most of the "rebel without a cause" style dramas, Picnic also
delves heavily into the feminine side of social frustration and its
wonderfully human depiction of the pressures growing up and growing old.
