CityMusic Cleveland announces FIFTH ANNIVERSARY SEASON:
FREE Concerts All Over Northeast Ohio & More
CityMusic Cleveland, the professional chamber orchestra and arts
outreach organization, announces its FIFTH ANNIVERSARY SEASON with
FREE concerts throughout Northeast Ohio, as well as a tour to Michigan
and Pennsylvania, and the addition of special children's concerts and
educational programs.
Since its debut concert in October 2004, CityMusic has won both
critical and audience acclaim. With ever-larger audiences, the
orchestra continues to draw both aficionados and those new to
classical music. Gramophone magazine raved: "[Music Director James]
Gaffigan draws incisive and flexible playing from the orchestra, whose
strings are elegant and precise, woodwind full of character, brasses
firm and timpani pointed." Fanfare magazine added, "Bravo!" The Plain
Dealer has called the orchestra “pure genius,” with music "superbly
played" and CoolCleveland.com notes the orchestra's "uncompromising
ability to wed sonic and formal imagination with expressive depth." In
addition, CityMusic Music Director James Gaffigan was recognized by
the League of American Orchestras with its 2008 Helen M. Thompson
Award for emerging music directors.
In addition to Maestro Gaffigan, the 2008-09 season features guest
conductor Danail Rachev (assistant conductor of the Philadelphia
Orchestra), guest soloists Kyung Sun Lee (violin), Edward Arron
(cello), Joshua Roman (cello), Mwatabu S. Okantah (narrator), Matt
Haimovitz (cello), and the choral ensemble Quire Cleveland, under the
direction of Betsy Burleigh. Programs include musical chestnuts
(Mozart's "Jupiter" Symphony; Brahms's Double Concerto), and lesser
known masterworks (Barber's Cello Concerto; Charles Ives's Symphony
No. 3). In addition, a special children's concert will feature
Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf."
In conjunction with the free concerts, CityMusic Cleveland presents
free exhibits of artwork by local artists.
All of CityMusic Cleveland’'s concerts are FREE and open to the
public. No tickets are required. Families with children are welcome;
many of the venues offer free child-care. Intermission receptions give
concert-goers an opportunity to meet and greet the artists.
