 Calling All Artists!
CITY OF SOLON COMMISSIONING NEW PUBLIC ART SCULPTURE
The City of Solon, through Solon Center for the Arts – a department of the
City – and former members of the Beautification Commission, is commissioning
an innovative, energetic and progressive sculpture for the Solon City Hall's
entryway. Residents of Solon of all ages were asked to reflect on the
following tag line and what it means to them. Here are the descriptive words
that came from that exercise:Solon: A City of
VisionDiversityServiceEducationCommunity These descriptive words for a new
sculpture's have come from those who live, work and play in the Solon
community. This will hopefully give an artist the opportunity to take these
words and translate them into an inspiring sculpture. The following is a
list of the general specifications to follow: The sculpture should
compliment the surrounding architecture and grounds of Solon City Hall. Each
inquiring artist is invited to view the space allotted for the sculpture to
determine sculpture size and style.

The sculpture should be three-dimensional with an appealing view from 360
degrees as it will be seen from all sides – as visitors enter City Hall and
also as they sit in the reception area through the windows. Sizing of the
sculpture should be appropriate for the space allotted. The triangular space
is approximately 10 feet wide x 6 feet deep x 12 feet high. It is essential
that the material(s) of the sculpture weather the elements for resilience.
The City has allotted $10,000.00 toward the commissioning of this sculpture.
Additional funds will be allocated for the sculpture base. Three dimensional
mockups submissions are due to Solon Center for the Arts by Friday,
September 12, 2008 at 4:00 pm for committee review. The Center is located at
6315 SOM Center Road in the Old City Hall Building on the corner of SOM and
Bainbridge Roads. One artist will be commissioned to reproduce the approved
mock-up into a full-sized sculpture. For additional information, call Ann
O'Loughlin, Art Department Coordinator, at Solon Center for the Arts at
440.337.1400.
