Dear Friends,

Originally announced for November 4th, CityMusic Cleveland's concert
has been changed to Wednesday, November 5th (still 7:30 pm at
Fairmount Presbyterian Church). We know everybody will be tied to
their televisions on Tuesday, watching election returns. So we've
rescheduled our performance.

I'm also enclosing information about CityMusic's Children's Concert,
featuring the Simple Symphony of Benjamin Britten, and Prokofiev's
"Peter & the Wolf" on Saturday, November 8th (3 pm, also at Fairmount
Presbyterian Church). This is part of an expanded Education Program,
including school concerts in Elyria and Slavic Village, and
instrumental instruction in those two neighborhoods, as well as
Cleveland Heights.

We'd appreciate your help in getting the word out.

As always, I would be happy to provide you with photos or any
additional information that you might like.

Cordially,
Beverly Simmons, Marketing Director

CityMusic Cleveland presents 2 FREE concerts in November: for Adults &
Children

With ever-larger audiences, CityMusic Cleveland continues to attract
both aficionados and those new to classical music. Gramophone magazine
raved: “[Music Director James] Gaffigan draws incisive and flexible
playing from the orchestra, whose strings are elegant and precise,
woodwind full of character, brasses firm and timpani pointed.” Fanfare
magazine added, “Bravo!” The Cleveland Plain Dealer has called the
orchestra “pure genius,” with music “superbly played” and
CoolCleveland.com notes the orchestra’s “uncompromising ability to wed
sonic and formal imagination with expressive depth.” In addition,
CityMusic Music Director James Gaffigan was recognized by the League
of American Orchestras with its 2008 Helen M. Thompson Award for
emerging music directors.

CityMusic's Fifth Anniversary Season, 2008-09, includes many
expansions and innovations for CityMusic Cleveland. These include 27
orchestral concerts, a 30-week Education Program repeated in three
communities, children’s concerts, and a concert tour to Michigan and
Pennsylvania. The tour program is presented Tuesday, November 5, at
7:30 pm in Fairmount Presbyterian Church (2757 Fairmount Blvd,
Cleveland Heights). Conducted by James Gaffigan, the program features
the phenomenal young cellist, Joshua Roman, whom the press has dubbed
a “Classical Rock Star.” He’ll solo in the Schumann Cello Concerto in
A minor. The program also includes Beethoven’s Symphony no. 2 and the
Ballet Music from Mozart’s opera Idomeneo.

Since winning the principal chair in the cello section of the Seattle
Symphony at the age of 22, Joshua Roman has become a favorite of
Seattle music lovers, with sold-out solo and chamber performances
throughout the city. When not performing in or in front of a Symphony
Orchestra, Joshua is likely to be found on the stage of a club,
performing music as varied as jazz or rock, as well as chamber music
or a solo sonata by Kodaly or Bach. His fearless pursuit of new
challenges has led him to expand his horizons and embark full-time on
his growing solo classical career. His interest in and exploration of
new music have led Joshua to work with many composers in performance
of concerti, chamber music, and solo works, including works of his
own. His 2008-09 season includes, among others, performances with
CityMusic Cleveland, the Edmonton Symphony, Quad City Symphony,
Stamford Symphony, and a return to the Seattle Symphony for the
premiere of the David Stock Cello Concerto. Joshua's desire to
communicate takes him beyond diverse concert venues. In the summer of
2006 in response to his own growing awareness of the atrocities in
Africa — specifically Rwanda — he traveled with his violin-playing
siblings to Uganda where they played chamber music in schools, HIV/
Aids centers and displacement camps, bringing a message of hope
through music.

A gifted musical communicator, James Gaffigan has been Music Director
of CityMusic Cleveland since its second season. He is also Associate
Conductor of the San Francisco Symphony, under Michael Tilson Thomas,
after serving for three years as assistant conductor of the Cleveland
Orchestra. In June 2008, Maestro Gaffigan was awarded the prestigious
Helen M. Thompson Award for Emerging Music Directors, from the League
of American Orchestras. He commented, "As a conductor, the work I
value most is that which allows me to introduce the relevance of
classical music into the everyday lives of all listeners. My work with
CityMusic Cleveland has been instrumental to this idea and I hope to
continue to be able to excite audiences with accessible concert-going
and adventurous programming."

On the following Saturday, November 8, at 3 pm (also in Fairmount
Presbyterian Church), CityMusic Cleveland invites children of all ages
and their families to a free concert featuring Sergei Prokofiev's
Peter and the Wolf and Benjamin Britten's Simple Symphony. Also
conducted by Maestro Gaffigan, this program features poet Mwatabu S.
Okantah as narrator of the popular Prokofiev story.

Mwatabu Okantah holds the BA in English and African Studies from Kent
State University (1976) and the MA in Creative Writing from the City
College of New York (1982). Currently, he is an Assistant Professor
and Poet in Residence in the Department of Pan-African Studies at Kent
State University. A former Director of the Center of Pan-African
Culture, he has taught at Union College, The Livingston College of
Rutgers University, Cleveland State University and Lakeland Community
College. He has published many books of poetry, including Reconnecting
Memories: Dreams No Longer Deferred, released in 2004 by Africa World
Press. In addition, Baba Okantah has worked in a variety of musical
situations, including time as Griot for the Iroko African Drum & Dance
Society; in an ongoing collaboration with the Cavani String Quartet;
and as leader of the Muntu Kuntu Energy Ensemble. A spoken word and
original music CD, Guerrilla Dread: Griot Stylee, is scheduled for
release in 2009. To date, Mr. Okantah has appeared at diverse venues
including Merkin Concert Hall in NYC, Market Square Concert Series in
Harrisburg, Cleveland Museum of Art’s Nia Café, Cleveland Institute of
Music Concert Series, Cleveland’s Sanaa and Ingenuity Festivals, the
Juneteenth Festival at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, First Night
Akron, Akron’s Annual African American Festival, Kent Heritage
Festival, Detroit’s Broadside Poet’s Theatre, and a number of
universities, including University of Ibadan (Nigeria) and Cheikh Anta
Diop University (Senegal).

CityMusic Cleveland is a professional chamber orchestra, founded to
perform free concerts throughout Northeast Ohio, accompanied by art
shows of local artists.

Our mission is to develop audiences and build communities through the
arts by:
¶ Presenting the finest quality performances of classical repertoire,
¶ Eliminating the twin barriers of high ticket prices and unfamiliar
venues,
¶ Working with neighborhood leaders to enrich the cultural offerings
of their
       communities.

In so doing, CityMusic Cleveland builds audiences for both the musical
and visual arts organizations in Northeast Ohio and beyond.
