The Men's Center at
Lakeland hosts
"Mama's Boys" Nov. 5
Theatrical event is staged by Cleveland-area formerly homeless men

The Lakeland Community College Men’s Center will be hosting
an original theatrical event by the Cleveland Public Theatre's (CPT) Education
Department and the Cleveland YMCA’s Y-Haven Program “Mama’s Boys,” on Wednesday, November 5 at 1:30 p.m. in
the Performing Arts Center on Lakeland’s main campus. The performance is free and open to the public.
For the ninth year in a row, CPT—Cleveland’s leading
alternative theatre—and Y-Haven—YMCA’s
transitional home and treatment center for formerly homeless men in recovery
from drug and alcohol addiction—have collaborated to create an original
performance.
CPT artists work with residents of Y-Haven to create an
original play performed by the residents and based on their personal
experiences. This year’s production is guided by Director Denis Griesmer and
Dramaturg Deborah Burke.
About Mama’s Boys
Set in a Cleveland neighborhood,
Mama’s Boys is the story about the role mothers play in our lives and about the
importance of community. The play opens with a serious event: Harvey nearly
kills his friend Ray because Harvey thinks Ray is responsible for the
disappearance of a shoebox left to Harvey by his dead mother. The whole
neighborhood gets drawn into this moral dilemma—from the peace protestor /hot
dog vendor to the preacher to the barber to the mailman and others—as everyone
simultaneously avoids Harvey as they search for the shoebox. Some are guilty,
others not. As Harvey spirals close to madness as his anxiety and anger
increase, the neighborhood pulls together to save not only Harvey, but
themselves.

An audience favorite year after year, the CPT/Y-Haven
Project offers candid insight into important issues of our society and gives
real hope for growth and change. Audiences are continually blown-away by the
poignant and moving stories presented by this powerful collaboration.
