Arnold Lobel's well-loved characters hop from the page to the stage in
Robert and Willie Reale's musical A Year With Frog and Toad.
Conceived by Mr. Lobel's daughter, Adrienne Lobel, A Year With Frog
and Toad remains true to the spirit of the original stories as it
follows two great friends Frog and Toad through four fun-filled
seasons learning life lessons along the way. This jazzy musical
bubbles with melody and wit, and is perfect for everyone in the
family. A Year With Frog and Toad is inventive, exuberant and totally
enchanting.
DESSA ROSE - May 29 - June 14
Book and Lyrics by Lynne Ahrens
Music by Stephen Flaherty
Based on the Novel by Sherley Ann Williams
Directed by Geoffrey Short
"We are handing you down the story...Listen child, to a story soon be
yours to tell..." A thrilling new musical based on the 1986 novel of
the same name by Sherley Ann Williams. The story takes place in 1847,
fourteen years before the outbreak of the Civil War. Variety called
it "an absorbing story of two strong women in the pre-civil war
south. Played with grit and conviction...[with] beautiful songs,
strongly etched characters and soaring emotions". Based on both fact
and fiction, the musical weaves together the stories of two real women
who struggled for different kinds of freedom in an era defined by
men. Ruth Sutton is a white woman abandoned by her husband and living
on an isolated plantation. Dessa Rose is an escaped slave on the run
who seeks refuge on Ruth's farm. The two women's uneasy alliance
ultimately transcends any racial barriers as they find the strength to
confront the world on their own terms. Their dangerous journey to
freedom and self realization makes for a musical that is, by turns
comic, tragic, uplifting and inspired.
