First Mondays features The Chittlin’ Thief

Dobama Theater’s First Mondays Readings series presents The Chittlin’ Thief,
a new play by Michael Oatman on Monday, December 1, at 7:00 p.m. in the
Heights Gallery located in the main branch of the Cleveland
Heights-University Heights Library, 2340 Lee Road on the west side of the
street. Heights Arts at the Library is at the foot of the bridge that spans
Lee Road connecting the main library with the new annex. There’s plenty of
free parking just outside.

White folks trying to be black, black folks trying to be white, Asians just
hanging in there. Playwright Michael Oatman shakes up racial stereotypes in
this engaging new comedy. The Chittlin’ Thief tells the story of Paul, a
rising young African American marketing executive who’s just not thug enough
to handle the agency’s latest gangsta rapper account. The money’s in the
street, his white boss tells him, lamenting that he’s found “the only black
man with less rhythm than I have.”

The Chittlin Thief will be read by a talented multi-racial cast that
includes Neil Hodges, Charles Kartali, Joe Verciglio, and Allison Bencar.
The Chittlin’ Thief has been read in Washington, DC, Nashville, Tennessee,
and at the Stella Adler Studio in Manhattan and was voted Best Comedy of the
Year by the African American Playwrights Exchange. Oatman is Playwright in
Residence at Karamu House and a member of the Playwrights Unit at the
Cleveland Play House.
The program is free although a $5 donation to defer the costs of the reading
would be appreciated.
