Actors' Summit get the spirit of Christmas in respective productions:
Tony Brown reviews

Monday, December 08, 2008

Go tell it on the mountain: Christmastime is here.

It's here in small-town Hudson, where Actors' Summit also just opened
"Sanders Family Christmas," set in rural Carolina.

It's a church celebration set on Christmas Eve, packed with gospel
music, and just the joy to bring us together.

'Sanders Family'

At Actors' Summit, the Sanders Family of deep-believing musicians
gathers on Christmas Eve 1941 (right after Pearl Harbor) in Mount
Pleasant Baptist Church.

The Sanderses, fans of playwrights Connie Ray and Alan Bailey will
remember, are the same clan that sings spirituals in the popular "Smoke
on the Mountain." They do bluegrass-gospel, with banjos and fiddles, not
electric bass and drums.

And when they aren't singing, they're witnessing to their faith. But
unlike "Black Nativity," this come-to-Jesus show is tinged with irony;
these believers have a sense of humor about faith.

There are 21 musical numbers over two acts sung and played by a
seven-member cast, directed by MaryJo Alexander and led by the affable
Dana Hart on two twangy instruments, mandolin and fiddle.

It's all good. It's all Christmas.

Through Sunday, Dec. 21, at 86 Owen Brown St., Hudson. $25-$28.
