University Circle Celebrates the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr.
A wealth of commemorative activities to take place at University Circle
institutions 

 

CLEVELAND (January 12, 2009) - In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,
the world-class institutions of University Circle are opening their
doors to the public for several days of education and reflection
beginning Sunday, January 18 through Friday, January 23. The majority of
the special events will take place on the national holiday in
remembrance of Dr. King on Monday, January 19. 

 

University Circle Inc. will run free shuttle buses on Monday, January 19
to accommodate the large number of visitors to the Circle and its
institutions between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm. Continuous shuttle stops
include Western Reserve Historical Society, Cleveland Museum of Natural
History, The Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland Botanical Garden,
Severance Hall, Cleveland Public Library (MLK, Jr. branch), the
Children's Museum of Cleveland, and Karamu House.

Annual Commemorative Program. Felton Thomas, Jr., new Cleveland Public

The Cleveland Orchestra

Instrumental, vocal, and spoken word performances at Severance Hall.
Post your hopes and dreams for the world on the "I Have a Dream Wall,"

- the Shaw High School Mighty Cardinals Marching Band. The Community
Open House concludes with performances by the Cleveland Orchestra Youth

The Cleveland Museum of Art

Educational programs ranging from art classes to inspirational

Cleveland Botanical Garden

Learn about the plant and crop contributions of African-Americans in
agriculture. Visitors are invited to make a friendship flower in the

Cleveland Museum of Natural History

Activities include mini planetarium shows, exploring the world of
insects in the Smead Discovery Center, making a craft project to take

The Children's Museum of Cleveland
Enjoy half-price admission to the museum all day. Decorate Peace Pins

The historic African-American theater invites visitors to celebrate Dr.
King's life with the 1st annual chili cook-off; dance, drama, and music
workshops; storytellers; youth arts and crafts; and a reenactment of the
March on Washington featuring Cleveland Public Power commissioner Ivan

Case Western Reserve University

Case Western Reserve University is proud to present its 2009 Convocation
Speaker, Keith Beauchamp, director of the landmark documentary, The
Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till. Emmett Till was murdered in
Mississippi in 1955, and his death was one of the catalysts that brought
about the Civil Rights Movement. Mr. Beauchamp will speak about Till's
