2009 Ice Festival Presented by KeyBank February 13th-16th, 2009

(Medina, Ohio- January 29, 2009) – More ice than ever will be flying around
the Historic Medina Square on Valentine’s Day Weekend as KeyBank presents
the 2009 Ice Festival. In cooperation with Elegant Ice, Main Street Medina,
and Main Street Café, the 2009 festival will feature three ice carving
competitions, ongoing demonstrations, face painting, and carriage rides.
This family-friendly event is free. While most of the carving and
demonstrations are done in the late afternoon and early hours, 2009 marks
the first time that sculptures will be illuminated at night. Aaron Costic,
Olympic Gold Medallist in Ice Carving and owner of Elegant Ice, will place
color-changing L.E.D. fixtures under each work of art. The sculptures will
be lit with multiple colors to highlight details, and will truly make this
year an around-the-clock experience.

The Ice Festival begins on Friday night, February 13th, at 5:00pm with
carving demonstrations by Elegant Ice and Ice Carving Olympic Gold
Medallist, Aaron Costic. The Festival continues on Saturday, February 14th
with the Main Street Medina Ice Festival Corn Hole Tournament at 11am,
carriage rides from 1-4pm, and an Individual Ice Carving Competition from
1-4pm. Please visit www.mainstreetmedina.com
<http://www.mainstreetmedina.com/> for registration and additional Ice
Festival information.

On Sunday, February 15th, a Team Ice Carving Competition will be held from
noon-4pm. Some of these ice sculptures will be crafted from more than 10
blocks of ice, and can reach over 12 feet tall. A Speed Carving Competition
with competitive rounds will begin at 5pm, and then continue at 6 and 7.
Carriage rides will be available from 1-4pm

The event concludes on Monday, February 16th, with the opportunity to view
the works of art created for the competitions, and to explore, dine, shop,
and discover all that the Historic District in Medina has to offer.

Main Street Medina Successfully Meets State and National Program Standards

(Medina, Ohio- January 29, 2009) – In just under one year of as an official
Ohio Main Street Program, Main Street Medina successfully received State and
National accreditation as an Official Main Street Program. Heritage Ohio
does an annual review for this distinction, based upon the ten-point
criteria created by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, of every
State of Ohio Main Street program. Items under review include: Broad-based
community support for the commercial district revitalization process, with
strong support from both the public and private sectors; comprehensive Main
Street Work Plan; historic preservation ethic; having an active board of
directors and committees; paid, professional program manager; and reporting
of key statistics.

To receive accreditation in the first year is not common, but thanks to the
strong commitment from the board of directors, the committee chairs and
volunteers, the City of Medina, and the greater community, Main Street
Medina was able to produce an impressive 6 pages of accomplishments.
Highlights of 2008 include the Around the Town 5k, the inaugural World Tour
of Music Concert Series, the 2nd Annual Chalk Festival, the 24th Annual
Candlelight Walk, and community projects including the decoration of the
entire Historic District for the holidays. The group also partnered with
other community associations to cosponsor activities such as an American
Muscle Car Show and several sidewalk sales

In addition to planning and hosting events, Main Street Medina is actively
working to bring new businesses to the Historic District, as well as
supporting the existing merchants and establishments.

The Economic Restructuring Committee held a retail recruitment event called
Main Street Medina: Open for Business that was sponsored by KeyBank, Western
Reserve Bank, and Gerspacher Real Estate with support from the City of
Medina and the Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce. In one night,
entrepreneurs and businesspersons could tour and view all commercial/retail
vacancies in the District as potential locations for new or expanded
businesses. The event was a critical success, and the Committee is actively
working with two interested persons and new businesses.

Monthly reports to Heritage Ohio, the State agency that oversees all Ohio
Main Street programs, showed that 39 active volunteers donated over 1,100
hours of time for meetings, working events, or planning new initiatives for
Main Street Medina. The group also received their official 501 (c) (3)
non-profit status; had a community-based web site created to promote their
activities and to provide information on the Historic District businesses;
and adopted an official Mission Statement reading “The mission of Main
Street Medina is to lead the effort for preservation, economic
sustainability, and continued evolution of the Historic District as the
heart of the community.”

In 2009, Main Street Medina will partner with Elegant Ice to host the annual
Ice Festival, February 13-16th, and is in discussions with Washington
Properties Inc. and the Sunrise Rotary to produce the Medina Cultural
Heritage Festival in August of 2009.

Membership in the program is $40 for individuals and families, and business
memberships range from $200 to $1,000. Valuable discounts at participating
merchants, restaurants, and discounted admission to concert series
presentations make membership a great value.
