The Award Winning MAD* Factory Players Present

"Miss Nelson is Missing"

Winner, 8th National Children's Theatre Festival
Book, Music, and Lyrics by Joan Cushing
based upon the book MISS NELSON IS MISSING! and MISS NELSON IS BACK! by
Harry Allard, Copyright ©1977 by Harry Allard Adapted by arrangement with
Houghton Miflin Company
Originnally Commissioned and Produced by BAPA's Imagination Stage, White
Flint, Bethesda, MD Original "Orchestrations by Deborah Wicks LaPuma""Produced
by special arrangement with THE SUSAN GURMAN AGENCY, LLC, New York, NY"

Miss Nelson's class is the worst behaved in the whole school. Spitballs
flying across the room, paper airplanes sailing every which way, and
uncontrollable children send the gentle, long-suffering teacher, Miss
Nelson, over the edge. But the students of Room 207 are in for a surprise
when Miss Nelson turns up missing and is replaced by Viola Swamp, the
scariest substitute teacher ever. The Swamp assigns homework like crazy and
wields her ruler like a sword. In desperation, the students set out to find
their beloved Miss Nelson... but will they ever get her ?

Seating is first come first served. Performance is FREE with GENEROUS
DONATIONS gratefully accepted.

> OBERLIN, OHIO (February 9, 2009) ? Slightly more than two years ago, the
> Oberlin Conservatory Symphony Orchestra performed under the baton of
> award-winning conductor and Oberlin alumnus Robert Spano to a packed Isaac
> Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall. That
> concert<http://www2.oberlin.edu/con/connews/2007/feat_carnegie.html>,
> which wowed the New York critics, is now available on the Oberlin
> Music<http://www2.oberlin.edu/oberlinmusic/>label.
>
> *The Oberlin Conservatory Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall* features
> pianist Pedja Muzijevic performing Mozart's *Piano Concerto No. 25 in C
> Major, K. 503 *(with Philipp Karl Hoffmann's cadenza); Jennifer Higdon's
> *blue
> cathedral*?one of the most performed orchestral works by any living
> composer; and B?la Bart?k's *Concerto* *for Orchestra*. The concert was
> recorded live on the Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall, in New York City, on
> January 26, 2007. Spano, who was named Conductor of the Year for 2008 by
> Musical America, is Music Director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The
> Carnegie Hall concert was presented with the generous support of Jolyon F.
> Stern (OC '61), President and CEO of DeWitt Stern Group, Inc.
>
>
> Vivien Schweitzer of the *New York Times* praised the Oberlin Conservatory
> Symphony Orchestra's Carnegie Hall appearance with Robert Spano,
> especially
> their performance of the Bart?k, which was, she wrote, "stellar." She
> called
> the orchestra's reading of the Higdon "dynamic," writing that the
> musicians
> "played ? with skill and understanding, vividly illuminating the
> Coplandesque swaths of color that build to an intense, optimistic climax."
> Muzijevic, she wrote, "gave a ? tastefully ornamented rendition" of the
> Mozart."
>
> Writing for *MusicalAmerica.com*, Patrick J. Smith praised the Bart?k as a
> "polished and forward-thrusting rendition calculated to bring down the
> house?which it succeeded in doing," and he agreed with the ovation the
> musicians received at the end of the program: "These young men and women
> had
> shown conclusively that the so-called 'death of classical music' is a very
> long way from being realized?at least at Oberlin."
>
> "The Carnegie Hall concert was an enormous success for Oberlin and a great
> experience for our students," says Dean of the Conservatory David H.
> Stull.
> "Maestro Robert Spano and Mr. Jolyon Stern have our permanent gratitude
> for
> bringing this wonderful project to fruition."
>
> Paul Eachus, Director of Audio Services at the Conservatory, was audio
> engineer for this recording. Associate Dean Michael Lynn is the producer

> Alyson Cambridge '02, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, and *The Oberlin
> Orchestra in China*, conducted by Music Director of the Oberlin Orchestras
> Bridget-Michaele Reischl. In 2007 Oberlin Music released *Beauty Surrounds
> Us*, which features original compositions and performances by members of
> Oberlin's award-winning jazz faculty.
>
> *About the Oberlin Conservatory Symphony Orchestra*
> "Some of America's best orchestral musicians" have trained at the Oberlin
> Conservatory of Music, notes the *New Yorker*, and since 1896 the Oberlin
> Orchestra, the Oberlin Chamber Orchestra, and the Oberlin Conservatory
> Symphony Orchestra (the school's touring ensemble) have been the pride of
> Oberlin. Each ensemble shares a rich history of performances with notable
> guest conductors, among them Marin Alsop, Pierre Boulez, Tan Dun, Sir
> Simon
> Rattle, Robert Shaw, Oscar Shumsky, Robert Spano '83, Igor Stravinsky,
> John
> Williams, Hugh Wolff, and David Zinman '58.
>
> In addition to the critically acclaimed performance at Carnegie Hall under
> the baton of Robert Spano, Music Director of the Atlanta Symphony
> Orchestra,
> recent appearances of the Oberlin Conservatory Symphony Orchestra under
> the
> baton of Music Director and Conductor Bridget-Michaele Reischl include a
> performance at Walt Disney Concert Hall in January 2009; at Cleveland's
> Severance Hall, home of the Cleveland Orchestra; and a 13-day tour of
> China.
>
> After Sir Simon Rattle conducted the Oberlin Chamber Orchestra in December
> 2004, *Plain Dealer* music critic Donald Rosenberg wrote that the concert
> was "stamped by magnificence." Indeed, Rosenberg included the
> Oberlin-Rattle
> performance of Mahler's *Symphony No. 4*, which he described as
> "uncommonly
> rich in poetry and drama," in his list of top 10 memorable events from the
> 2004 concert season.

> FOUR Saturdays, June 6, 13, 20 & 27 from 10 a.m. to noon.
> Instructor: Jasen J. Smith
> Tuition: $80
> A beginner's class into the art of designing Theatrical costumes.
>
> Costume designers create the "look" of each character by designing clothes
> and accessories the actors will wear. Depending on the style and
> complexity of the show, costumes may be made, bought, remade from existing
> clothing or rented. The costume of each character should reflect the
> personalities of the characters in the script.
>
> The shapes, colors and textures that a costume designer chooses can make
> an immediate and powerful impact on the audience. Costumes can provide
> audiences with information about a character's occupation, social status,
> gender, age, sense of style and tendencies towards conformity or
> individualism. Costumes can reinforce the mood and style of the
> production, distinguish between major and minor characters, suggest
> relationships between characters, change an actor's appearance, suggest
> changes in character development and age AND be objects of beauty in their
> own right. The costumes in a prodcution truly distinguish one character
> from another.

> *The Last Mass at St. Casimir's*
>
> By Tom Dudzick
> Directed by Don Wozniak
>
> The third and final leg of Tom Dudzick's trilogy of plays about the
> Pazinskis -- a Polish-Catholic family living in Buffalo, N.Y., during the
> 1950s, '60s, and, in this installment, the '70s -- works fine as a
> standalone effort, yet is best enjoyed by those familiar with Over the
> Tavern or King o' the Moon,. This offering, which unfolds during "the
> blizzard of the century" that socked in the East Coast in 1977, has a more
> decidedly serious coloration than Tavern and Moon. The family patriarch
> has
> died, and mom, Ellen, is selling Chet's Bar & Grill and its upstairs
> apartment -- the family's home -- and moving on. The question for Ellen
> and
> her three 30-something kids is: What will become of 31- year-old Georgie,
> the fourth sibling? Born mentally retarded, he has begun to develop a
> memory-loss condition similar to senile dementia.
>
>
>
> The cast includes Angela Griffith, Steven Griffith, Jacob Wachholz, Jack
> Warren and Kathy Whitmore.
>
> Performance dates are February 13, 14, 20, 21 at 8 p.m., with Sunday
> matinees on February 15 and 22 at 3 p.m.
>
>
>
> Tickets are $12.00 each or $10.00 each for groups of 15 or more and may be

> During most of the past seven years, Verb Ballets was one of the most
> exciting dance venues in the area. Then, about a year and-a-half ago,
> they seemed to lose their focus. The programs seemed disorganized and the
> dancers seemed to be going through the motions. They lost company members
> and did not replace them.
>
> A change in artistic management took place, dancers were added and
> deleted, and it has done a world of good. The company?s recent
> program, presented as part of the Chagrin Arts 2009 Winter Series and
> performed at Chagrin Falls High School?s beautiful Performing Arts
> Center, was a return to the shining days of the past. The company?s
> pieces ranged from traditional ballet, to contemporary and modern dance,
> to a youth-centered offering, to the late Heinz Poll?s ?BOLERO.? All were
> well performed. There was precision and a renewed positive attitude.
>
> The opening piece, ?VESPERS,? choreographed by Ulysses Dove, with
> restaging by Dawn Carter, was a disciplined work, centering around a
> series of chairs, which were sat on, jumped on and over, straddled, and
> balanced upon. Based on the passions and the spirituality of women who
> have faith, it was danced to the music of Mikel Rouse.
>
> Brian Murphy, one of the best male dancers in the area, was splendid as
> the solo performer in David Dearling?s ?DARK WOOD.? He displayed complete
> body control as he moved with assurance and power . This was a tour de
> force.
>
> ?PETER AND THE WOLF? was danced to the vocal narration of the late Leonard
> Bernstein and the recorded music of Sergei Prokofiev?s ?Peter and the
> Wolf,? which uses a musical instrument to represent each of the animals
> and the people in the piece.  For example, the flute represented the bird;
> the oboe, the duck; the clarinet, the cat; and grandfather was showcased
> by the bassoon. The delightful interpretation by Pamela Pribisco was well
> costumed by Gino Ventura. Though the pacing of the piece was a little
> languid, the children in the audience seemed delighted through out.
>
> Jennifer Moll Safonovs and Brian Murphy, added grace and beauty to the
> program, dancing Heinz Poll?s ?classically conceived ANDANTE SOSTENUTO.?
> The pas de deux, set to Mendelssohn?s Piano Concerto No. 2, was a visual
> delight as the duo performed floating lifts, alert partnering, and smooth
> classic movements with ease and assurance.
>
> The program ended with the spirited ?BOLERO,? complete with the waving
> cloaks of the bull fight. The conclusion was met with an enthusiastic and
> well deserved standing ovation from the sizeable crowd.
>
> Capsule judgement: Welcome back Verb Ballets!
>
> The company?s next performance will be at Cleveland Public Theatre on
