Speak from the Heart
Readings of new work from the CPT/Elyria YWCA Women's Voices Project

Donations will be accepted. The performance will be followed by a
post-show discussion and reception.

 

A powerful evening of original works of drama, story and poetry created
and performed by women in transition. Established in 1999, the Women's
Voices Project is a collaboration between Cleveland Public Theatre and
the Elyria YWCA's Women's Campus Project. Women's Voices connects Campus
Project residents with the tools of creative expression to help them
achieve independent living and recover from domestic violence, addiction
and other adversities. Following performances at Cleveland Public
Theatre and the Elyria YWCA, the women tour their work to area shelters,
recovery centers and prisons.

 

Under the guidance of CPT Education Director Chris Seibert, Women's
Voices participants have worked with gifted local artists Deborah Burke,
Sheffia Randall Dooley, Lisa Langford, Jacqueline Westhead and Elizabeth
R. Wood.

 

Together, the artists and the residents have engaged in writing and
dramatic activities to improvise and verbalize stories that are born
from the truth of difficult life circumstances. "When deciding on a
title for this year's production, so many of the women wanted it to be
known that these writings come from their heart - a place that is deeply
honest and central to who they are," says CPT Education Director Chris
Seibert. "Once audience members hear the work that these women have
created, the fact that the writing is straight from the heart will be
abundantly clear. As audience members and witnesses to that kind of
sharing...all I can say is how lucky we all are."

Speak from the Heart features work by Bethany Joy Aleshire, Katie Brown,
Joyce Carey, Mary Demmy, Tonia Eber, Debbie Fesler, Michaela Joyce, Debi
Kruzyk, Crystal L. Luciano, Sarah Pietch, Sharlene Royster, Ryan V. and
Theresa Tobin. 

 

The 2008-09 Women's Voices Project is made possible by the generous
