> About the Show
>
> Created by the troupe under the direction of Wendy S. Duke, "The Complete
> History of Theatre -- Condensed" is a romp through theatre history in ways
> that Oscar Brockett (author of a well-known college textbook) never
> imagined! From the roots of theatrical performance in pre-history through
> Ancient Egypt and Greece, Asia, Rome, the Dark Ages, the Renaissance in
> Europe, American theatre and all the way through 20th Century "isms" --
> this is a living, breathing and highly slapstick time line of theatre
> history.
>
> Excellent entertainment for the novice as well as the theatre-history
> buff, "The Complete History of Theatre -- Condensed!" was created by the
> troupe and was over four years in the making. The performance is a perfect
> example of arts integration -- infusing the standards of acting as well as
> social studies in one project.

>
> About the Miller South Commedia Troupe
>
> Miller South School for the Visual and Performing Arts is a public magnet
> school for the arts in Akron. The school received the highest grade on the
> state of Ohio's report card of "Excellence with Distinction." All students
> must audition to attend the school in a chosen discipline (drama, music,
> visual art or dance). The school is located at 1055 East Ave in Akron.
>
> Miller South drama students receive commedia training in sixth grade and
> may audition for the troupe in seventh and eighth grade. For the past
> three years, the group has worked with visiting commedia artist Gale
> McNeely. Now in its twelfth year, the troupe has performed commedia
> adaptations of "Romeo and Juliet," "Richard III," "Hamlet" and "The
> Tempest." The troupe's annual "A Commedia Christmas Carol" continues to
> delight local audiences. The troupe has performed for groups and events
> throughout the area and beyond, including performances with the Akron
> Symphony Orchestra; Akron Arts Expo; the Highland Square Festival;
> Shakespeare in the Spring at the University of Akron; Cleveland Public
> Theatre's Vaudeville Show; the International Thespian Festival in Lincoln,
> Nebraska; the Ohio State University's Renaissance Faire; and at Union
> Station in Washington, D.C.
>
> About the Art of Commedia
>
> Commedia dell'Arte was born in Renaissance Italy, as a form of popular
> market-place comedy featuring masks, stock characters and lots of physical
> comedy. It is the ancestor of circus clowns, harlequinades, vaudeville
> comics, silent-film comedy stars, and television sit-coms.
>
> About Weathervane Playhouse
>
> Founded in 1935, Weathervane Playhouse is volunteer-powered not-for-profit
> performing-arts organization.

> Designing Theatrical Costumes
> FOUR Saturdays, June 6, 13, 20 & 27 from 10 a.m. to noon.
> Instructor: Jasen J. Smith
> Tuition: $80
> A beginner's class into the art of designing Theatrical costumes.
>
> Costume designers create the "look" of each character by designing clothes
> and accessories the actors will wear. Depending on the style and
> complexity of the show, costumes may be made, bought, remade from existing
> clothing or rented. The costume should reflect the personality of the
> characters in the script.
>
> The shapes, colors and textures that a costume designer chooses can make
> an immediate and powerful impact on the audience. Costumes can provide
> audiences with information about a character's occupation, social status,
> gender, age, sense of style and tendencies towards conformity or
> individualism. Costumes can reinforce the mood and style of the
> production, distinguish between major and minor characters, suggest
> relationships between characters, change an actor's appearance, suggest
> changes in character development and age AND be objects of beauty in their
> own right. The costumes in a production truly distinguish one character
> from another.
> This class will delve into the Theory of Costume Design, Costume History
> and Research resources and techniques.
>
> An Introduction to Acting Technique
> FOUR Saturdays: June 20, 27 and June 11 & 18 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
> Instructor: Stephen Skiles
> Tuition:$100
>
> What is acting technique? How can it help an actor? Stanislavski... who is
> he? Using games, improvisation, personal experiences and text, this class
> will begin to explore the basic methods and principles of Stanislavski's
> acting technique. The focus of this class is to learn about acting
> objectives, physicality, "the magic if" and constructing character. This
> is a fantastic introduction to the tools upon which most actors depend!
>
> Costume Rendering
> FOUR Saturdays, July 11, 18, 25 & August 1, 10:00 a.m. to noon.
> Instructor: Jasen J. Smith
> Tuition: $80
> A beginner's class into drawing the costume design.
>
> Renderings are the drawing that costume designers create to show
> silhouette, period, seam lines, placement of trim and any costume
> accessories. In this class, students will learn to draw the human form,
> dress the human form and paint the final design. Students will learn to
> use the Fashion Journalists rendering technique. The class will also
> research historical periods and work on overall costume character design.
> Each student will need to purchase a watercolor pad, watercolors or water
> color pencils, a pencil and eraser.
>
> Introduction to Directing
> ONE Saturday, 7/11 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
> Instructor: Melanie YC Pepe
> Tuition:$40
>
> What makes a good director? What makes a good rehearsal? In this one day
> workshop, students will be introduced to the tools, techniques and
> concepts traditionally used by Directors. Specifically the class will
> discuss staging, blocking notation, directing focus, pacing, silence,
> justified movement and leadership/working with actors.
>
> Acting & Monologue Workshop
> SIX Saturdays, July 13, 20, 27, August 3, 10 & 17 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00
> p.m.
> Instructor: Melissa Owens, AEA
> Tuition:$150
>
> In this workshop, students will study fundamental principles of acting and
> the development of physical and vocal self-expression in character
> interpretation. Each student will develop these skills by selecting,
> memorizing and performing monologues that can be used for auditions. The
> audition process will also be discussed with tips on material choice,
> presentation, resumes and what to wear. You will learn how to develop your
> monologue as an acting piece as well as make your monologue presentation
> in a confident, professional manner.
>
> Vocal Music Technique
> TWO Saturdays, 8/15 - 8/22 (VMT AD)
> Instructor: Sarah Bailey, M.M.
> Tuition: $80
>
> This class covers the fundamentals of vocal technique, and is suitable for
> beginners to intermediate singers. Specific topics include posture,
> breathing and support, eliminating muscular tension, resonance, and
> diction. Each student will apply these techniques through work on 2 vocal
> pieces, a musical theater number and a classical piece. Time is allotted
> for group exercises and voluntary solo singing. Please bring bottled

> Synopsis:
> The Brothers Grimm "go Broadway" in this cockeyed fairy tale where all of
> your favorite characters (Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (of
> beanstalk fame) and The Witch) meet and interact on their journeys. The
> sophisticated score by Stephen Sondheim has been adapted to make it
> easier, though still challenging, for the young talented singers and
> actors. Into The Woods Junior is a funny and engaging way to get young
> people to think about the stories with which they've grown up and the
> ethical issues raised therein.
