[NEohioPAL] BLT Presents: Early One Evening at the Rainbow Bar & Grille

Where will you be and what will you be doing when the world is finally destroyed? That’s the subject of the humorous, but thought-provoking play, “Early One Evening at the Rainbow Bar & Grille,” being staged by Brecksville Little Theatre as their last production of this season.

This off-beat and off-Broadway hit was written by Philadelphia playwright, Bruce Graham, and follows seven characters over the course of one very crazy evening before the destruction of the world. Each character has his or her own theory of what is causing the end of the world, but nobody knows for sure. The characters find themselves in a seedy, small-town bar, where they desperately seek to live their final moments to the fullest. On their “bucket list” is to get rich, get safe, get even, get drunk, or get whatever they can. With total destruction only hours away, there is chaos and nothing makes sense anymore, except for one stranger who offers hope. This setting forms a background for an unlikely romance that ultimately makes a whole lot of sense.

In the cast are Mark Bernhardt as a bartender and would-be novelist who’s big break comes just as the world is about to end and Pam Diturno as the worldly, other bartender who just looted the jewelry store. Steve Harmath portrays a slow-thinking mechanic who’s hoping to make it to Disneyworld, while David Hess is an aluminum-siding salesman in search of a bomb shelter. Veteran community theatre performer David Reifel plays the revengeful survivalist. Rounding out the cast is Jennifer Justice as a phys ed teacher trying everything she’s been missing in life, and, last but certainly not least, is Brecksville’s Mayor, Jerry Hruby portraying the mysterious stranger. Directing the production is Judi Kaye, whose directorial debut was the very successful Brecksville Little “Little” Theatre production of “Alice in Wonderland.”

“Early One Evening at the Rainbow Bar & Grille” runs Friday and Saturday evenings, April 24-25, May 1-2-8-9 with a Sunday matinee on May 3. It’s being staged at the Old Town Hall on Brecksville’s Town Square, Routes 21 & 82. Curtain is 8 pm evenings and the matinee at 2.pm. The theatre is handicapped accessible.
