Sun May 17 23:03:46 PDT 2009

Dynamics Community Theater of Tallmadge is proud to announce the following audition dates for its summer production of Rogers and Hammerstien's, "Oklahoma!"

Tuesday, May 19 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Black Box Theater at Tallmadge High School.
Wednesday, May 20 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Black Box Theater at Tallmadge High School

You can come either day. Appointments are not necessary.
The show dates are August 7, 8, 14 & 15th.
Sandy Michaels and Matthew Dolan will share the directing duties.

This is a two-part audition. You will read from a portion of the script...we will provide the scripts. We also ask that you prepare 8-10 measures from a song you will sing for the vocal audition. You can sing a cappella, with CD, or bring sheet music. You can sing one of the songs from the show or any other song of your own choosing. As "Oklahoma!" does contain certain important dance elements, those auditioning may be asked to perform some simple movement/dance exercises based on experience.

Please bring a small snapshot of yourself. We will attach that to your audition form. We cannot return the photo.

This show calls for a large cast with several major roles for those from young teens through seniors. We will need some children (ages 8 and up) for some large group scenes.

If you have any questions, please contact Nancy Wack at 330-633-5031

Dynamics Community Theater is an intergenerational volunteer program in the Tallmadge City Schools.
In 1993, the Tallmadge Schools won a $500 seed grant from the state of Ohio to develop a program that would enable adults and students to interact. The arts, and drama in particular, provide a common ground for people of all ages. With this in mind, Dynamics became a reality.
The real measure of the success of Dynamics does not have a number or dollar sign. It begins when each new cast and crew assembles– young people sitting with
their peers and adults off to the side. Drawn together by the roles they play, they begin to interact. Both students and adults learn and grow from the experience. By the time they’ve taken their final bows, they are like family! Intergenerational
friendships made during productions continue.
More than 700 people from the ages of 3 to 80 have been involved in some capacity with one of our productions. More than 16,000 ticket holders have seen our performances.

GLTG's "female version" of Simon classic may have you looking for the clicker

This review appeared in the News-Herald 5/15/09

The Odd Couple is one of the most popular and celebrated plays in the American comedy catalog. It has gone from its original 1965 Broadway staging to a 1968 movie, a 1970's TV sitcom and a Broadway revival in 2005.

In 1985, playwright Neil Simon revised his male-dominated play to accommodate a female cast for a short-lived Broadway run. Like Adam and Eve, this play's female rendering sprang from the rib of the original and is essentially of the same mold, save for some very interesting alterations in all the right places.

The Odd Couple: Female Version, on stage at the Geauga Theater in Chardon, is about two very good friends who move in together after their marriages break up. They soon discover they're having the same conflicts they had in their marriages, resulting in some very funny confrontations. Florance Unger is a compulsively neat, emotionally unstable housewife who eventually gets on the nerves of Olive Madison, an excessively sloppy, fun-loving sports fanatic.

The Geauga Lyric Theater Guild production of this comedy classic, under the direction of Tina Burgett-Krause, is an odd coupling. It delivers the stage play as if it were the sitcom, which does not jive.

Most of the GLTG actors appear to have come straight from NBC's central casting, offering mere caricatures of Simon's creations. Marylin Young, Kate Wright and Stefani Rose, playing long-time friends who come to Olive's apartment for a weekly game of Trivial Pursuit, allow one trait to define their every action and line delivery. While funny, thanks to Simon's tamper-proof genius, they have no heart.

Maureen Tanner, as Florance, is hysterical as a walking, talking psychosis, but not in a good way. She appears to be actually hysterical. Her portrayal is so extreme and, well, scary, that she is neither sympathetic nor likable. She should be both in a buddy comedy that establishes her as the featured buddy.

The talented Michael Green and Larry Solomon, as smarmy upstairs Spaniards who have a date with Olive and Florance, have the potential to steal this show. They look and sound hilarious upon their entrance, but go too far with their "two wild and crazy guys" antics and not far enough in creating viable characters. They quickly grow tiresome.

Fortunately, Linda Fundis delivers a genuinely funny and authentic Olive. Her comic timing and well-rounded persona salvages this production. Amy Pelleg, as board game-playing buddy Mickey the cop, also brings a delightful, fully fleshed-out character to the stage. Her subtle acting beneath a rough exterior nicely complements and supports Fundis' efforts. These two are the only female performers who appear to have a relationship on stage.

Borrowing heavily from the TV sitcom guidebook, director Burgett-Krause has her actors stand up to deliver their lines when sitting at the living room table, as if simulating a close-up. They do not move freely across the stage, as if fearful that they will walk out of camera shot. They flagrantly over-emote as if confident that each punch line will be automatically followed by a boisterous laugh track.

Greg Pribulsky surrounds these actors with a wonderful set but it, too, is oddly coupled. He goes to great lengths to construct an elevator just outside Olive's apartment, which is visible when the apartment doors are open. Nice touch.

Problem is, visibility requires enormous double doors, which are ungainly in appearance and operation. Missing from the set is a window, resulting in actors awkwardly pantomiming its opening and closing.

Pilot episodes of TV sitcoms are almost always overproduced, overacted and underachieving, as if things have not yet gelled, but will. This may be the case with the opening weekend of The Odd Couple: Female Version. In time, this production could very well offer more fluid and refined performances, if not a window.

The Odd Couple: Female Version runs through May 24 (8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. Sundays), at the Geauga Theater, 101 Water Street, Chardon. Tickets, which range from $10 to $12, can be obtained by calling 440-286-2255 or visiting www.geugatheater.org.

*Directed by Robert McCoy *

>From the author of /Tuesdays with Morrie/ and /The Five People You Meet
In Heaven /comes the hilarious comedy /Duck Hunter Shoots Angel/,
opening its Ohio premiere at Chagrin Valley Little Theatre.

*"This CVLT production thrives... testimony to why this community
theater has been identified as one of the best in the area."
*/Bob Abelman (News-Herald, Chagrin Valley Times, Solon Times, Geauga
Times Courier... Member, International Association of Theatre Critics)/

Two bungling Alabama brothers think they've shot an angel, not a duck,
while hunting in the swampy southern woods. A cynical tabloid reporter
and his unwilling photographer are sent to cover the story but begin to
think there might be something to it when they find feathers, a wing,
and a tiara at the scene. Throw in a shopgirl at the local Gasmart, a
half-man/half-alligator, and a ghost, and you have a classic "culture
clash" comedy bearing a love story, sibling rivalry, yellow journalism,
and ultimately a heartfelt message.

Starring: Don Bernardo, Eric Oswald, Mike Rogan, Adam Young, Tara
Holman, Kevin Derrick, Alex Marzullo, Marvin Mallory and George Spelvin.

Chagrin Valley Little Theatre is generously funded by Cuyahoga County
residents through Cuyahoga Arts and Culture and is supported by the Ohio
Arts Council.

TOMMY was done by STAGECRAFTERS a few years ago and did a great job and I look forward to this production too! By the way, that last production had a talented fellow as Capt. Walker and he is now on Broadway..in Hair...Mr. Andrew Kober! Think ACTORS not "teenagers", Jamie has done wonderful work at Stagecrafters.

Peace,

Jan

About the show:
Is it Opera? Is it Musical Theatre? Yes. It is one of the most important works in both music and theatre of the 20th Century, and it still has resonance and entertainment value today. Weill and Brecht brilliantly question our values, our heroes, and our humanity while hitting us over the head with the velvet hammer of beautiful music.

Physical
Comedy and Stage Combat for Improvisers

With
John C. Davis

Sunday,
June 7th, 6-9 pm. Pilgrim Congregational Church, 2592 West
14th St ., Cleveland, OH.

$35.

Learn
the techniques of physical storytelling and stage combat as they
apply to the improv stage. Learn safe falling, basic fisticuffs and
physical comedy while working without a script. Learn to throw a
realistic punch and react in a true manner while acting completely in
the moment.

John
C. Davis has been a theater professional for more than two decades, a
fight coordinator at Beck, Weathervane and the Cleveland Shakespeare
Festival, and a director at Weathervane and the CSF. He has taught
stage combat with, among others, the International Order of the Sword
and Pen, the Florida Renaissance Festival and at Oberlin College.

John
is probably best known for his comedy Sword-fighting Show Hack
and Slash. The Show has been seen internationally for
more than fifteen years and over four thousand performances. After
the events of September 11, 2001, John has spent a large portion of
every year entertaining the armed forces on six USO tours. These
tours traveled to sixteen countries including the most remote regions
of Afghanistan and Iraq. In March of 2006, while in Fallujah, Iraq,
Hack and Slash performed their one hundredth show for the USO.

Space
in this workshop is limited. Contact Andrew Jorgensen at
andrew.jorgensen at yahoo.com
to reserve your spot.

I'm sending this at the request of one of my colleagues. His sister-in-law is selling her tickets for the Elton John/Billy Joel Concert. Please contact Amy Frindt as indicated below. If necessary, I would be happy to arrange pick-up/delivery of tickets here at St. Ignatius High School.
