 THE ARTS AND CULTURE COLLECTIVE OF CLEVELAND ANNOUNCES ROUND
TRIP EXCURSION TO THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE NATIONAL BLACK THEATER
FESTIVAL IN WINSTON-SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA FOR ARTISTS, ARTS EDUCATORS AND ARTS
ENTHUSIASTS AUGUST 3 - 8, 2009 

 

 

Cleveland
(OH), June 10, 2009 – The Arts and Culture Collective of
Cleveland announces a round trip excursion for the 20th anniversary of the National Black Theater Festival, a
six day celebration of live theater performances, symposiums, new works and
much more in Winston-Salem, North Carolina August 3 – 8, 2009.  Travel
accommodations are provided by Eloise Travel of Cleveland.

 

The
National Black Theater Festival is a star-studded event that honors African-American
achievement in the entertainment industry. 
The event marks the historical preservation of the people, events and
achievements in theater that shape African-American past, present and
future.  The Festival includes over 100
performances from Black theater companies from all over the United States.

 

Some of
the theatrical performances include A
Rose Among Thorns (starring Ella Joyce), Halley’s Comet (starring John Amos); Miles Long and Friends Experience (starring Malcolm-Jamal
Warner); A Handsome Woman Retreats (starring Kim Wayans) and I Am Who I Am: The Story of Teddy
Pendergrass (produced
by the Black Ensemble Theatre in Chicago).  Other notable works include In The
Continuum
(produced by The St. Louis Repeorty Theater); Hope: Living And Loving With HIV In Jamaica (produced by the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting of Washington
D.C.) and Womyn With Wings (produced by the Flow Theater of Columbus, Ohio).

 

The National Black Theater Festival will honor “a
who’s who” of Black theater including Woodie King, Jr. (Sidney Poitier Lifetime
Achievement Award); Julie Dash (Outstanding Achievement in Film); Reggie Ray
(Outstanding Achievement in Costume Design), singer/actress Melba Moore (Living
Legend Award) and director/acting coach Clarence (C.T.) Turner (Living Legend
Award), former associate professor for the theater program at Prairie View
A&M University. 

 

A series
of workshops, conducted by theater professionals, scholars and celebrities
during the week, are free and open to the public of all ages but tickets to over 100 staged plays have
admission fees of $7 - $42, and are not included in the excursion
package.  **Please note: Food and admission to
theatrical performances are not free or included in the excursion package deal.

 

One of the
highlights of the National Black Theater Festival is the International Vendor’s Market, a unique and commercial exhibition
of creative merchandising that is also culturally educational.  The
International Vendor’s Market is housed in the M.C.
Benton Convention
 Center, located in the center of Winston-Salem and all of the Festival
traffic.  It is free to the public.  An array of merchandise in fine arts, home
furnishings, books and other accessories from a diverse collection of artists
and merchants will be on display.   Other
special events include Youth/Celebrity
Project and the National Youth Talent
Show for children of all ages.

The round
trip excursion includes 5 nights at the Hawthorn Inn & Café, where you will
receive a complimentary breakfast each morning of your stay.  Each day the
Festival offers free workshops and opportunities to enjoy live theater and film
presentations from the finest theaters and actors throughout the
country.   **Stage plays and special event tickets are
separate fees based on your interests and selections.

 

The Arts & Culture
Collective of Cleveland is a new organization formed to support the
development of creative works reflecting African American and other cultural
experiences and traditions.  In addition
to mutual support, collaborative projects and fundraising, the Arts &
Culture Collective will participate in activities to preserve, promote,
support, and enjoy cultural institutions, organizations, projects and programs.
