Melissa Daubert, who incorporates the audience as part of her interactive
visual art, will premiere her latest work at Cleveland's Ingenuity Festival
July 10-12, 2009. Her kinetic sculpture "Urban Trotters" resembles a
life-size walking horse and rider, and - at roughly ten feet long and seven
feet high - is the largest moving work of art she has created. The rider is
part of the sculpture and sits atop the horse, but his job is the easy one:
festival-goers must add the elbow grease to make the work come alive. With
help of a complex articulated steering system, visitors push the piece,
navigating horse and rider throughout festival grounds. The horse's legs,
rigged atop cams, simulate walking, while head and tail bob up and down.
Movement is just half the experience that Daubert and the audience create.
As "Urban Trotters" travels down alleys and around city corners,
horse-related audio plays and is transmitted to wireless speakers along the
course, creating audio events for bystanders.

"Urban Trotters" will be on view at the Preview Party July 9 and will travel
the outer perimeter of the Ingenuity Festival grounds July 10-12, 2009. For
