Cleveland Public Theatre Announces

2009-2010 Season

Cleveland Public Theatre Executive Artistic Director Raymond Bobgan is
proud to announce the 2009-2010 Season:

Ahead of the Curve...Right on Track

"Cleveland Public Theatre is the place for bold, new, adventurous and
relevant works of performance," says Bobgan. "Our exciting line-up
includes amazing new works from local and national playwrights and is
full of world premieres." The 09-10 season includes 4 World Premieres, 2
Ohio premieres, 8 weeks of Big [BOX], the return of Little Box and the
10th anniversary of CPT's acclaimed performance series DanceWorks.
Bobgan adds, "Though we have been struck with the same challenges facing
non-profits across the country, CPT's programming is vital and we are
finding the way to increase services to the community and enact our
mission to nurture great artists and produce fulfilling and compelling
theatre."

CPT's philosophy - that the arts can literally change the world - is
actualized through strategic programming and investing resources in new
plays and emerging artists that deal directly with relevant issues of
our times. The mission of CPT is to raise consciousness and nurture
compassion through ground-breaking performances and life changing
educational programs.

The Alice Seed by Michael Sepesy
James Levin Theatre
October 8 - October 24

Originally scheduled for the 2008-2009 season, this world premiere play
is by local playwright Michael Sepesy, who recently developed Ms.
Adventures at CPT. The Alice Seed is a moving and exceptional tale of
loss and the powerful desire to regain the past. In The Alice Seed, a
woman travels to the underworld in an attempt to bring back her deceased
daughter and returns with a seed. Part horror story, part family drama,
The Alice Seed is pure gothic Americana - Edgar Allen Poe meets David
Lynch and the Coen brothers. World Premiere

No Child... by Nilaja Sun
Storefront Studio
October 8 - October 24

CPT presents the return of No Child...by Nilaja Sun, the award-winning
one-woman show based on Sun's experiences teaching at Malcolm X High
School in the Bronx, where every day students struggle simply to come to
school. The talented Nina Domingue plays dozens of characters in this
hilarious and moving solo show that Fran Heller of the Cleveland Jewish
News says "Just might be the best show you'll see all year long. The
75-minute show packs an unforgettable wallop. Don't miss it." Tony Brown
of the Plain Dealer raved "Few evenings in the theater are so thoroughly
entertaining and educational...This is must-see theater." Created in
response to No Child Left Behind, this exciting work highlights how one
determined woman can change the lives of countless others and exposes
the inequity of the American public school system. Directed by Lisa
Ortenzi.

Why Torture is Wrong and the People Who Love Them by Christopher Durang
Gordon Square Theatre
October 15 - October 31

The always absurd and sometimes offensive Durang turns political humor
upside down with a raucous and provocative satire about America's
growing homeland insecurity. Honing in on our private terrors both at
home and abroad, Durang relieves our fears in this bizarre black comedy
for an era of yellow, orange, and red alerts. Don't miss the regional
premiere of this hilarious and sometimes disturbing new work. Directed
by CPT Associate Artistic Director Beth Wood. Ohio and Regional Premiere

Big [BOX] Series but on a smaller scale, designed to foster works at an
earlier stage of development. A diverse body of new plays will presented

will be a benefit for the Y-Haven program. Original Work

Browns Rules by Eric Schmiedl
Gordon Square Theatre
November 19 - December 12

A cabaret-style world-premiere by nationally recognized local playwright
Eric Schmiedl, Browns Rules is both a send-up and a love-letter to The
Cleveland Browns. Part vaudeville, part sideshow, part variety show
Browns Rules is an interactive exploration of the relationship between
Cleveland and our beloved football team. With a rock band on stage,
three performers combine storytelling and drama as they rip apart myths,
celebrate heroes, and try to understand what makes the Cleveland Browns
so important to our culture. What was the All-America Football
Conference and who destroyed it? How did Paul Brown inspire his famous
1949 all-star team? Art Modell, friend or foe? Who called "Red Right
88?" Who wrote the song "Bernie, Bernie?" Cleveland Browns Stadium,
asset or financial disaster? These questions and more are examined as
Browns Rules looks at our dear Brownies and the city that loves and
hates them. Written by Eric Schmiedl, Directed by Bill Hoffman, songs
co-written by Schmiedl and Hoffman. Featuring Nick Koesters (Member,
AEA), Eric Schmiedl and Nathan Lilly. World Premiere.

the perspective of a 33-year-old slacker who takes a job as Crumpet, a
Macy's Christmas elf. As thousands of customers come through his

cheer. Sedaris' hilarious retelling of his unique experience in the
throes of the holidays is sure to bring a smile to even the grouchiest
face. Directed by BD Bethune; the talented and versatile Doug Kusak
