Fine Arts Classes for Tots and Elementary-Aged Students Begin in September



The Ashtabula Arts Center has scheduled a number of classes this fall for
the youngest members of your family.  Classes for kids are available in
acting, art, dance, and music.



"Music for Tots" with Dr. Carol Linsenmeier will be offered for children
ages 3 to 5 and will be held on Thursdays  from 11 - 11:30 a.m.  Session #1
runs Sept. 17 - Oct. 15 or Session #2 runs Oct. 22 - Nov. 19.  The cost of
the class is $28 for the entire session.  As a start for a lifelong love of
music, children in this class will sing folk and traditional songs, play
musical games, learn about the structures of music through movement, and
perform on simple instruments.  Through music, children will develop
listening, social and pre-reading skills.



Also taught by Dr. Linsenmeier will be "Hands-on Music Theory" for ages 6 to
10 on

Mondays from 5 - 5:30 p.m. Session #1 runs Sept. 14 - Oct. 12 or session #2
runs Oct. 19 - Nov. 16.  The cost of the class is $28 for the entire
session. Using a hands-on approach, students in this class will learn to
read basic music notation, learn to build scales and chords, and harmonize
melodies.  Students will gain an understanding of the building blocks of
music that will enhance their appreciation and performance of it.



 "Storybook Stagecraft" is an acting class for elementary-aged students.
Offered by Kim Godfrey on Tuesdays from 5:30-6:30 p.m., the class will run
for 10 weeks beginning Sept. 15.  Cost of the class is $60 for the entire
session.   Focusing on a classic children's story, students will learn the
basics of acting -- stage delivery, diction and projection,

emotion, pantomime, focus, and blocking.   At the final class students will
present a staged performance of the story as readers' theater for family and
friends.



"Creative Movement" is our first dance class offered for kids aged 4 & 5.
Taught by Karen Sly, the class will be offered on Saturdays from 10:00 -
10:45 a.m. for 10 weeks beginning Sept. 26.  The cost of the class is $65
for the entire session.  This class for young children works with exploring
space and movement at different levels, improving coordination and utilizing
different body parts. Children will work with shapes, moving in different
directions and improving their understanding of time and rhythm.
Participants will work independently as well as collaboratively, and will
always need to bring their creative imaginations with them!



"Pre-Ballet" for ages 5 - 7 will be offered with Clover Robinson on
Thursdays from 4:30-5:15 p.m. for 10 weeks beginning Sept. 17.   Cost of the
class is $65 for the session. Exploring a modified ballet technique.  Basic
ballet vocabulary, basic body alignment and rhythm will be introduced.
Prerequisite: Creative dance or coordinator's permission.



"Miss Spider's Tea Party" for preschool - kindergarten students on Saturdays
from        10-10:45 a.m.  Taught by Rebecca Stowell, the class will run for
5 weeks beginning Sept. 19.  Cost is $28 for the entire session.  Beginning
with a  reading of "Miss Spider's Tea Party," children in this class will
have fun creating their own clay dishes to be used in a tea party at the
last class.  Creations will be kiln fired to permanency.



"Preschool Art Expression" will be offered on Tuesdays from 11 - 11:45 a.m.
for 5 weeks beginning Sept. 15. Taught by Meeghan Humphrey the cost of the
class is $28  for the session.  Preschoolers will explore many of the tools
and materials used in making art and learn to relate their projects to a
story or idea.  They will receive instruction in the proper use and care of
materials and be encouraged to develop confidence.  Kids should dress for a
mess.



 "Animal Explorers" for grades 1-3 will be offered by Meeghan Humphrey on
Mondays from 3 - 4 p.m. for 8 weeks beginning Sept. 14.  The $30 class fee
is for the entire session.  Kids will use many different types of materials
and techniques as we explore working in the style of artists who have used
animals in their work.  We will look at examples from ancient history,
different countries and even modern art for inspiration.



"Mix it up with Paint" for ages 8 & up will be offered on Mondays from
5:30-6:30 p.m. for 8 weeks beginning Sept. 14. Taught by Lyn Versaw the cost
of the class will be  $35 for the entire session.  Work with various methods
of adding texture to paintings.  Students will try their hand at impasto,
wet on wet painting and using science to add texture to their paintings.
This is a fun class for those who like to experiment.



"Drawing for the Young Artist" for grades 1-3 will be offered on Tuesdays
from 4 - 4:45 p.m. for 8 weeks beginning Sept. 15.  Taught by Meeghan
Humphrey the cost of the class is $30 for the entire session.  Designed for
those who really love to draw and want to try new things or for the student
who needs help in building their self-confidence in drawing.



"Masquerade" for grades 2-6 will be offered on Wednesdays from 4 - 5 p.m.
for 8 weeks beginning Sept. 16.  Taught by Meeghan Humphrey, cost of the
class is $35 for the entire session.  Students in this class will learn a
little bit about the history of masks and have the chance to create their
own.



"Claytivity" for grades 1-6 will be offered on Thursdays from 5:45-6:45 p.m.
for 8 weeks  beginning Sept. 17.Taught by Sandy Rill the cost of the class
is $40 plus a materials fee of $5.  We will work on a series of projects
that incorporate all the basic methods of hand building in clay.  Students
will use their own creative ideas in this class.  All projects will be
bisque fired and glazed to create permanent works.



"Art Explorers" for grades 2-6 will be offered on Wednesdays from 5 - 6 p.m.
for 8 weeks beginning Sept. 16.  Taught by Meeghan Humphrey cost of the
class is $35.

We will use paints, pastels, markers, ink pen, watercolors and colored
pencils in all different combinations.  We may even do some sculpture.  If
your child likes art and trying new things, they will love this class.



Registration is required for all classes.  Classes are available for all
ages in acting, dance, music and the visual arts.  A complete schedule is
