Hello Neohiopalers...WELCOME TO OCTOBER!
Kick off the new month with a great film, a fun musical, great jazz
and lots more coming to
Stocker Arts Center this fall!

Friday, October 2, 2009 - 7:30pm - SILENT LIGHT - (FILM) From the
luminous opening shot, which is without question one of the most
stunning opening shots ever committed to celluloid, it becomes clear
that SILENT LIGHT is the work of a visionary filmmaker who is
challenging himself and trying to address genuinely deep human issues.
Beautiful and profound, it is cinema at its most breathtaking!

Monday, October 5, 2009 - 7:30pm - THE WEDDING SINGER - (Performing
Artists Series LIVE ON STAGE) With a score that pays loving homage to
the pop songs of the '80s, The Wedding Singer will take you back to a
time when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up, and a wedding
singer might just be the coolest guy in the room. Don't miss the fun!

Friday, October 9, 2009 - 7:30pm - TOKYO SONATA - (FILM) The story
concerns a Japanese businessman, husband, and father of two, who
unexpectedly loses his job. Unable to break the news to his wife, he
dresses up every morning and pretends to go to work, instead wasting the
days away with a former classmate who is also unemployed. Equal parts
social commentary and situational comedy, Kurosawa's film also feels
like a thriller, thanks to the exceptionally atmospheric work of the
cinematographer and musical composer.

The 2009 Fall Film Series is also in full gear! Coming next:

Friday, October 23, 2009 - 7:30pm - TULPAN - TULPAN is a work of
extraordinary filmmaking, an exhilaratingly alive and sweet-natured
fairytale set in a remote landscape of a Kazakh steppe, an environment
where only shepherds live. Asa returns from military service to live
with his sister, Samal, her husband, Ondas, and their three children.
Asa's dream is to have his own flock of sheep, but his boss tells him
that until he gets married, his wish will never be granted. The only
trouble is in this particular case, the candidates for potential wife
can be counted on one finger. Her name is Tulpan.

Saturday, October 31, 2009 - 7:30pm - EVERLASTING MOMENTS - In this
breathtaking film, a woman experiences an artistic awakening after being
introduced to photography. Based on real-life events, the story opens in
Sweden in the early 1900's. In a time of social change and unrest, war
and poverty, Maria, a young working class woman, wins a camera in a
lottery. The camera grants her new eyes with which to see the world
making her alcoholic, womanizing husband feel threatened by his wife's
newfound outlook on life.
