Duffy Liturgical Dance Ensemble Celebrates 25 Years in the Community

Anniversary concert to feature live music, dance and 

national guest artists


 


SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio (October 9, 2009) -- On Sunday, November 8, the Duffy Liturgical Dance Ensemble (DuffyLit) celebrates 25 years with Wading in Muddy Waters: Swimming Up Clear Streams, a performance of live music and dance at PlayhouseSquare’s Ohio Theatre at 1501 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland. The performance begins at 6pm.


 


Wading in Muddy Waters: Swimming Up Clear Streams is a compilation of pieces from the past 25 years of the Duffy Liturgical Dance Ense mble that traces the evolution of the Negro spiritual through modern arrangements of spirituals, jazz, Motown, and down-home blues.


 


“The audience will experience a music and dance performance which captures the essence of African American music, as evidenced in the universal message of the spiritual and the musical forms for which it serves as the foundation,” says Edna Duffy, founder and artistic director of DuffyLit. “The spiritual is a national treasure, and it teaches us optimism, hope, faith and endurance.”


 


In addition to original dance pieces on Sunday, November 8, Wading in Muddy Waters: Swimmin g Up Clear Streams will feature the Cleveland premiere of Changed My Name, a cantata written by Linda Twine, music director of Broadway’s The Color Purple. The cantata
 will feature Grammy Award-nominee soprano Cynthia Wilson and the North Carolina Central=2 0University Choir.


 


Other guest performers include Jason Warley, New York City dancer and choreographer, conductor Rollo Dilworth of Chicago, and the Oikos Ensemble, a world music/jazz band.


 


Tickets for Wading in Muddy Waters: Swimming Up Clear Streams cost $35 for adults and $25 for students and seniors, with a group adult rate (20 or more) of $25. Tickets may be purchased from the PlayhouseSquare box office at

About Edna Duffy


Edna Duffy has performed at major venues throughout the United States, Europe, West Africa and Australia. Her musical and dance performances are inspired by the music and lyrics of the American Negro spiritual. In addi tion to teaching dance and vocal music at DuffyLit studios, Ms. Duffy serves as the director of liturgical dance at First United Methodist Church in Cleveland.
