The Akron Film Festival is starting a new program this month to give local filmmakers the chance to win $250: In "The New History of Akron" filmmakers will make a mockumentary based off of plot elements provided at an orientation on November 22, 2009 at the Akron Art Museum. Contestants can change the city's origin, explore an alternate history where Akron is the dynamite city instead of rubber, or delve into the theory that the Goodyear blimp only flies to hide UFOs.

Here are the details:
There is a $15 entry fee per team and no limit on team size. Teams must supply their own cameras and other equipment. The teams do not have to be from Akron.

At an orientation on Sunday, November 22nd at 3:00 PM at the Akron Art Museum, AF will supply several elements of current Akron life that must be explained by your story. For example, one of them will be: “Why is there a blimp perpetually overhead?”

Use photos, archival footage, interviews, and other tools of documentaries to tell your story. It could be as simple as photos with a voiceover. The story must be fiction, but the elements that make it up may be real or fabricated. The finished project must last five minutes or fewer. Deliver your project to us using one of the methods in the chart below, and notice the differing deadlines depending on your delivery method.

After watching the projects at a wrap-up event on December 10th at 6:30 p.m., an independent panel of judges will determine the winner, which will be announced later that evening. The winning team will receive $250, plus an assortment of items from local businesses, and will be screened again as part of the Akron Film Festival, taking place from September 23rd to 26th, 2010 at the Akron Art Museum.

Registration forms can be found on our Web site: www.akronfilm.com.

Hope to see everyone there!
