The Sunshine Boys Opens December 11
The Canal Fulton Players will be presenting the wonderful comedy by
Neil Simon, The Sunshine Boys, on December 11-13 and December 18-20, 2009.
The play, which is a Samuel French production, will be presented in two
acts at The Community Connections Theatre, 2391 Locust Street, Canal Fulton,
Ohio.
There are several new items connected to this production. This is the
first time that any production has been totally presented off the premises
of the Canal Fulton United Methodist Church. This was done because there
were several church events that needed the Fellowship Hall in December.
The second new item is that this production will be presented
completely on a stage. Instead of using the environmental theatre concept, the
production staff decided to not only use the small stage provided by Community
Connections but also to use a portable stage built by the stage crew of
the Players. The portable stage measures twenty four feet long, eight feet
wide and thirteen inches high. This was done because several patrons had
trouble seeing the performances of On Golden Pond and Once Upon a Mattress.
The third new item is that this production is being directed by
veteran actress Mary Mahoney who appeared as Chelsea in On Golden Pond. After
twenty one productions, David Van Gaasbeek has moved up into the producer's
role solely. By doing this, it allows him to expand the theatre program and
also expand the manner in which the Players will be presenting their
productions in the future. Already, Mr. Van Gaasbeek is meeting with two
organizations which will allow the Players to present other types of drama and
comedy in the Canal Fulton area. Mr. Van Gaasbeek is excited since what he
originally proposed would happen for the sixth year of this program is
coming to fruition.
The cast is an excellent one which has a great deal of experience and
talent. Leading the way as "The Sunshine Boys" are Steve Ryan and Ken
Hehmeyer who play Willie Clark and Al Lewis. Steve is debuting on our stage
after a long career with other theatres. His wife, Linda, appeared as Ethel
in Moon Over Buffalo. Ken returns to our stage after endearing himself to
the audiences during March when he played crusty but lovable Norman Thayer
Jr. in On Golden Pond.
Matt King plays Willie's nephew and agent, Ben Silverman. The rest of
the cast consists of Duane Acker as "The Patient," Sarah Price as "Nursey
Nurse," Irene White as "The Nurse", and Josh Rowe as "Eddie." "The Voice
of the Director" is portrayed by Mr. Van Gaasbeek.
Admission is $7.00 for adults and $5.00 for seniors and children under
the age of twelve. For further information and directions, please call Mr.
Van Gaasbeek at 330-494-1022 and 330-854-4387.
