Corby Grubb was indeed a tremendous individual and professional.

However there are two points you make that are confusing:

Corby was noted for his unannounced comments and his impatience with
actors and directors.

We will miss his suddenness.

At Saint Joseph Academy, the consensus of the Production Staffs that have worked with Corby Grubb is as follows:

Corby Grubb was a brilliant sound man but an even better person. He had an incredible ear and craft for sound design. He had been working for theatres for decades, but also worked extensively in schools. At a Saint Joseph Academy, he kept equipment there rent free all year long (for years and years) so it could be used for meetings, concerts, events and even summer programs. He was an amazing teacher to young people, and was extremely patient and encouraging in teaching them his craft. He never got frazzled or upset, even in the most stressful of moments. He would come to extra rehearsals and performances to lend a hand well beyond his paid fee, and was always available by phone to carefully explain a tricky solution to an untrained adult trying to work the sound equipment. He will be incredibly missed in the high school and professional theatre communities, and his talent and kindness will never be replaced.

Heaven now has the best sound designer the clouds can afford. Thunder will sound even better :)

Subject: [NEohioPAL] Passing of Corby Grubb

To Board, Staff, and Ensemble friends and Colleagues,

It is with deep sadness that I inform you of the passing of
Corby Grubb of Alpha Audio Associates. Corby was Ensemble's
sound designer and engineer for over 15 years, starting at The Civic
with us in 1994. He had been battling cancer of the throat for several
years, and quite courageously at that. Several shows we did were
accomplished by hand notes and gestures because he had lost his voice.

Corby was noted for his unannounced comments and his impatience with
actors and directors. He was a quiet man normally, so his sudden vocalizing
always caught us by surprise. He was especially honored to have been
selected to record President Obama's visit at Shaker Heights High School last
fall.

Corby's last show for Ensemble was "The Man who Came to Dinner" and he
recorded our 30th Anniversary Benefit in the Bolton Theatre. We will miss his
suddenness, and we will miss his acute sense of technicality, for which he
was a thorough professional in his field. But mostly we will miss a kind and
considerate man, who was always at the theatre even during his last months.

Corby passed away on December 20, 2009. No services will be held, and we have made an attempt to contact his family. To his friends and clients in Northeast Ohio we send
our deep condolences, and join with them in remembering Corby Grubb
