Peter Pan – A Musical Adventure flies into town for its second North
American production February 20th, 2010, as part of Mercury Summer
Stock’s “Just Beyond The Stars” Gala. Sir James Barrie’s timeless tale
of the boy who never grew up is reborn as a spectacular musical by
George Stiles & Anthony Drewe, composers of the new Mary Poppins, with
an innovative book by the late Willis Hall. The staged reading of this
spectacular musical will be the culminating event in Mercury Summer
Stock’s “Just Beyond the Stars” Gala being held at the newly completed
Breen Center for the Performing Arts on the St. Ignatius campus.
PETER PAN - A Musical Adventure first saw light of day in Denmark, at
the International Musical Of The Year in 1996, where it won two top
awards for Best Song (WHEN I KILL PETER PAN) and The Orchestra's
Award. In 1999 it was seen in a full production at Det Ny Teater in
Copenhagen, performed in Danish. Under the direction of Julia McKenzie
and Jonathan Butterell a staged concert, with the BBC Symphony
Orchestra, was produced as a one-off event at the Royal Festival Hall
in 2001 - which was broadcast on BBC Radio 3. A fuller semi-staged
version, with the London Symphony Orchestra, was mounted at the Royal
Festival Hall over Christmas 2002. That same winter it was also seen
for the first time in the USA, at the Prince Theatre in Philadelphia.
Sadly bookwriter, Willis Hall, died in March 2005, aged 75. The show
received it`s first fully-staged British production at Birmingham
Repertory Theatre in December 2007 and was revived for Christmas 2008
at the West Yorkshire Playhouse.
The Mercury Summer Stock production will mark only the second time the
musical will have played in the States and will feature a cast of 60
and an orchestra of 8. Among those taking on familiar roles are
Cleveland Favorites: Matthew Wright as Captain Jas. Hook, Maria Thomas
Lister as The Storyteller, Natalie Green as Tiger Lily, Arthur Wise as
Smee, Jeff Grover as Mr. Darling, Jen Myor as Mrs. Darling, Kelly
Monaghan as Wendy Darling, Corey Mach as Tootles, Jason Samuel as
Nibs, John Paul Soto as Slightly Soiled, Alex Arroyo as Curly and
Brian Marshall as Peter Pan with musical direction by Bill Corcoran
and staging under the direction of Pierre-Jacques Brault. It is an
event the whole family won’t want to miss!
