From Julie Washington at The Plain Dealer:

<a href="http://www.cleveland.com/movies/index.ssf/2010/01/nehst_studios_web_site_asks_so.html">Nehst Studio's Web site asks some actors to pay if they seek a film role</a>

Some excerpts:

"Larry Meistrich's Nehst Studios is asking actors to pay to get a rolein his movies being made in Northeast Ohio, something that the ScreenActors Guild frowns on and might investigate."
. . . . .

"But Meistrich said talent agencies and managers who register withScreentest.biz will be given a code that will allow them to submitactors' profiles at no cost. The Web site's mention of "professionaldiscounts for quality submissions" refers to that code, he said. Agentswill be contacted when the codes are available."
. . . . .

"Actors should not be charged to audition or to access the auditionprocess, said Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, deputy national executivedirector and general counsel for SAG, the largest labor union representing actors in film, television and new media.

"Most actors audition many times before landing a job, which couldadd up to a substantial expense if they have to pay to be consideredfor roles, he said.

"Some SAG contracts prohibit anyone associated with the productionfrom accepting anything of value for a casting opportunity.Crabtree-Ireland declined to comment on whether this applies to NehstStudios or what action SAG might take."

. . . . .

Read the whole article. It covers a lot of ground. Importantly, Meistrich does say he will work with casting companies and will also use open casting calls. Let's see how it unfolds.
