The Maltese Bodkin <http://www.cvlt.org/80thSeason/maltesebodkin.php>/*
*a comedic mystery by David Belke *
*Friday, February 5 at 8 PM
Saturday, February 6 at 8 PM*
*Directed by David Malinowski *
Times were tough for hard boiled detective Birnam Wood. He never asked
to be in London. Especially in 1605. Danger, daggers and dames abound in
this comedic mystery with a Shakespearean twist. First produced for the
1990 Edmonton Fringe Theatre Festival, the largest theatre festival in
North America, The Maltese Bodkin is a two-hour adventure that's as
packed with laughs as it is layered with literary jokes.
The story follows a detective named Birnam Wood (Bobby Thomas). When
Wood's partner is found dead with a dagger in his back (a bodkin
decorated with Maltese markings), the hard-boiled 'private dick' has to
search for the killer amidst a cast of crazy suspects portrayed by a
band of nine talented actors under the direction of David Malinowski.
The familiar Shakespearian characters include Viola (Kacey Durbin),
Charlotte and Puck (Amy Pelleg), Antionio, Donalbain, Guildenstern and
Sebastian (Dan Jacobsen), Iago, Falstaff and Ratcliff (Mark DePompei),
Catesby and Fang (Roger Atwell), Mercutio and Rozencrantz (Nate Earley),
Richard III and Prospero (Rollin DeVere) and Quickly (Yvonne Pilarczyk).

Mr. Death and the
Redheaded Woman <http://www.cvlt.org/80thSeason/mrdeath.php>/*
*A world-premiere folk-musical!*
based on the original story by
Helen Eustis
with
Music and Lyrics by Bill Rowe
Book by Shelley Costa
*Fridays & Saturdays at 8 PM
February 12 - 27*
*at the River Street Playhouse, 56 River St.
Directed by Pamela Ruiz *
CVLT's River Street Playhouse presents the world-premiere of a new
musical by local musician Bill Rowe and local playwright Shelley Costa.
Based on Helen Eustis' story /The Rider on the Pale Horse, a short story
of the Old West/, the musical /Mr. Death /tells of Maude Applegate (Lisa
Tarr), who makes a bargain with Mr. Death (Brian McCann) to spare the
life of Billy-be-damn Bangtry (Jon Gellott), her own true love. Also
taking part in the tale are 'Granny' (Natalie Dolezal) and Bill Rowe as
the narrator.
Originally published in the Saturday Evening Post in 1951, /The Rider on
the Pale Horse/ was dramatized in the 1950s for an episode on General
Electric Theater starring Lee Marvin and Eva Marie Saint, and then
danced, in a separate episode, by choreographers Gower and Marge Champion.
Helen Eustis, currently living in Manhattan, has graciously given Bill
Rowe and Shelley Costa permission to adapt her wonderful Western fairy
tale for musical theater. The result, Mr. Death and the Redhead Woman,
is a lively one-act play with five characters and thirteen original
songs. Rowe and Costa first collaborated in 2007, when their full-length
musical, /These People/, was produced at the River Street Playhouse.
