*Sevi Bayraktar's participation in “Mysterious” is a part of her
residency with Young Audiences funded by the Cleveland Foundation. Sevi
is an accomplished dancer specializing in the art of the Gypsy or Roma
culture. The full spectrum of human emotions is expressed in the
dramatic art and culture of the Gypsies. Freedom is the essence of the
Gypsy soul, but looking deeper into this culture, we see a way of
thinking full of joy and an ironic outlook on life and the hardships and
oppression that people may face every day. This indomitable spirit is
represented in their dance. Sevi sheds light on Gypsy culture and
their geographical journey from India to Russia, Northern Europe, the
Balkan area, Anatolia (Turkey) and Spain. The Gypsies have adapted and
absorbed bits of each culture with whom they have lived, both enriching
and reaffirming their own strong core culture along the way.
