Junk2Funk Charity Event
To benefit North Coast Health Ministry

Lakewood, Ohio February 23, 2010 – Local Girl Gallery, 16106 Detroit Avenue, Lakewood, will be a fashion diva’s meca on Saturday, April 24, 2010, from 7pm-10pm, for another of the City’s Green smART projects when art's and designers will be auctioning off “new” chic sustainable fashions and art.

The JUNK2FUNK Auction put on by Local Girl Gallery, GreenSmart Gifts, EcoLakewood and business and artists advocates, Lakewood is Art, will benefit North Coast Health Ministry while touting the four R’s of life: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Respect during the City’s month long Earth Day celebration in April.

For the Auction, Northeast Ohio artists are asked to design one-of-a-kind fashion and art, anything from clothes to jewelry to scultpture all made by recycled materials for the Auction. “We have all heard that green is the new black,” said Mary Evans, owner of Green Smart Gifts, in Lakewood, a gift shop offering only earth-friendly products. “Lakewood has long been at the forefront of eco-friendly initiatives and in prompting the community to think seriously about sustainability and take accountability for its actions. “

“Not only is our community leading the green movement but also it is incredibly rich in design talent and creative thinking. This exciting event sheds light on some serious topics in a very fun way,” says Linda Goik owner of Local Girl Gallery.

Respect and support for those without health insurance will be sewn into each design, as every designer will choose their supplies from discarded materials. These gorgeous art pieces will have their beginnings as “trash”, but will be transformed into unique, one-of-a-kind art pieces.

Ruthie Koenigsmark, President of Lakewood is Art (presenting sponsor of JUNK2FUNK) adds, “Art is how we express our individual style and values every day – contributing artists are in a unique position to promote the message of sustainability and help to others by participating in this event.”

The April 24h Gala Evening features a “green” cocktail reception hors d’oeuvres from local  restaurants, compostable plates and cutlery; and organic, fair trade coffee from Coffee for a Cause-a new local business started by Mireille Sjoblom-Kious and Ruthie Koenigsmark that donates $3 per bag of coffee sold to a number of local and national charities.

North Coast Health Ministry--The goal of North Coast Health Ministry is to provide healthcare to the uninsured of western Cuyahoga and eastern Lorain counties.  We’ve identified a group in need in our area and are working to provide them with healthcare that is comparable to many of the area’s larger providers.  We are proud of the depth of services we provide. In addition to our medical role in the community, we work to make the population at large more aware of the problem facing our area’s residents living with no medical insurance.  We want to bring a new face to the uninsured…. "I have been touched by the honesty and vulnerability with which our patients’ describe their problems and tell their stories, “ says NCHM Medical Director, Phil Tomsik, MD. “Many come to me in desperation and crisis.  The months of symptoms they have ignored due to fear of medical costs.  Many see no other options to improve their situation.  What I have
come to realize is that their stories could be the story of anyone, given certain circumstances.”
