Three Sessions: Saturday and Sunday, May 1 and 2, 10am – Noon and Monday,

This master class will provide for theatre artists of any stripe (actors,
directors or designers) tools as they investigate plot, character, theme,
exposition, imagery, and other crucial parts of a play's structure. It will
also provide a method for breaking a play down into playable beats and
actions, from start to finish. It will introduce a way to read a play that
makes it truly theatrical, that anyone can do. Required reading for the
class will be Backwards and Forwards, by David Ball, and Hamlet, by William
Shakespeare.

DIRECTING WORKSHOP
PUTTING IT TOGETHER: A DIRECTOR AT WORK

*Instructor:* Seth Gordon<http://www.fairmountcenter.org/summerfaculty.html>,
Associate Artistic Director – Cleveland Play House
*Dates:* Session One (three weeks) June 21 through July 9, 1:30 pm – 4:30
pm
*Limit:* 8 students
*Ages:* 9th grade – Adult

This intensive course will take the serious directing student through the
entire directing process: from the first time you read the script, to
deciding its main event, script analysis, research, design, staging and
working with actors and other collaborators. Each student will direct a
scene from one of three plays: Our Town, by Thornton Wilder, The Glass
Menagerie, by Tennessee Williams, or The Effect of Gamma Rays on
Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds, by Paul Zindel. All three plays, along with the
text analysis book Backwards and Forwards, by David Ball, will be required
reading for this course. This will be a very intense three weeks of work for
those who wish to receive a straightforward and comprehensive introduction
to the art of directing a play.

Interviews will be held Tuesday, April 27, 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm. Appointments
will be in fifteen minute increments. Sign up for an audition by calling the
Fairmount Center at 440-338-3171 or complete the form at this
link<http://www.fairmountcenter.org/auditionsignup.asp>.
If you can’t make it on this day, a phone interview or Skype video
conference interview may be set up by contacting the Fairmount Center at
440-338-3171. If available, please bring a resume and picture to your
audition. Also, please download this
form<http://www.fairmountcenter.org/pdf/FPACauditionform2010.pdf>,
