The Bald Soprano
An Anti-Play

Wednesday-Saturday, April 14-17, 2010 at 7:30 PM
Saturday, April 17, 2010 at 2:00 PM

by Eugène Ionesco
Translated by Tina Howe

Directed by Terence Cranendonk

Often called the father of the Theater of the Absurd, Eugène Ionesco wrote groundbreaking plays that are simultaneously hilarious, tragic, and profound.
In The Bald Soprano Ionesco throws together a cast of characters including the Smiths, their guests the Martins, their maid Mary, and a fire chief determined to extinguish all fires - including their hearths. It's an archetypical absurdist tale and Ionesco displays his profound take on the problems inherent in modern communication.

Director Terence Cranendonk most recently directed productions of Brecht's Good Woman of Setzuan and his own adaptation of Euripides' Iphigenia at Lake Erie College. Terence was co-founder, performer, writer and director with Mustard Seed Theater Lab in New York City from 1986 to 1989. From 1992 to 1999, Terence was a member of the New World Performance Laboratory, with whom he toured and performed throughout the Midwest, Europe and South America. From 1994 to 1999 he was Director of Cleveland Public Theatre's Annual New Plays Festival. As an actor, Terence has performed Off Broadway and regionally at venues such as the Kennedy Center, New York's Public Theatre, Home for Contemporary Theatre, and Target Margin. Local performances include the Musically Speaking series with the Cleveland Orchestra; Crave with Theatre Ninjas; The Gamblers and Confessions at Kennedy's in Playhouse Square; Ferdinand the Bull and The Nutcracker at Cleveland Playhouse; and Stars Fell All Night, The Hairy Ape, I Dreamed of Rats, Fable of the Cloister of Cemeteries, Woyzeck, and The Book of Saints and Martyrs at Cleveland Public Theatre. In addition, Terence has taught acting and dramatic literature at The University of Akron, Cuyahoga Community College, and was recently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Theatre at Lake Erie College.
