MALTZ MUSEUM HOSTS READING OF V-E DAY

The Maltz Museum honors Jewish American Heritage Month and the 65th anniversary of V-E Day with a staged reading of Beachwood playwright, Faye Sholiton’s award-winning play V-E DAY. The reading takes place on Wednesday, May 5, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. and features several cast members from the 2003 production at Dobama Theatre.
In V-E DAY, a widow in Cleveland Heights receives a visitor bearing a box of wartime newsletters. As the visit releases a floodgate of memories for an elderly couple, it also allows a grown daughter to see her mother young again, for a day.
The play traces its roots to a carton of wartime newsletters called “Hello Again” that Sholiton read while working as a writer for the Cleveland Jewish News. Contributors turned out to be the younger versions of her parents’ friends, her friends’ parents, even her late father. A decade later, the stories formed the backbone of her play – a story about love, loss, choices and consequences.
V-E DAY won multiple awards, including an Individual Artists Grant from the Ohio Arts Council; first prize in the Brigham-Young University new play competition; and fourth prize in the Writers’ Digest contest. Scenes have been published in anthologies, most recently in DUO! The Best Scenes for Two for the 21st Century (Applause, 2009).
Tickets to the reading are free, with museum admission. Reservations are required and can be made at 216 593-0575. The museum is at 2929 Richmond Road, Beachwood.
