Friends:

Most of the responses and exchanges about Mr Berko's recent review of *Gypsy
*have been polite and constructive. The tone in some, however, has edged
toward something rather less productive.

As when we get behind the wheel of a car, we internet users sometimes
succumb to a temptation to extend a measure of discourtesy which we would
never dream of offering in face to face conversation.

The assumption with which I myself try to keep on the beam is that all of us
- reviewers, performers, audience - are interested in the health of the Art
and in its improvement. There's plenty of room for mistakes all round, but
if all of us - reviewers, performers, audience - keep our criticism aimed at
helping all of us - reviewers, performers, audience - DO BETTER, then we
can't go too far wrong.

And if we can keep our little NeOhioPal corner of the internet free of
rudeness, we will be doing a good deed.

all the best to all

Robert Hawkes
