The Youngstown Playhouse will host a five week summer "Shakespeare Acting Workshop", beginning June 16 -
July 17. The classes will be conducted by Michael Dempsey, director of the current Playhouse hit musical , CURTAINS, who will also direct the upcoming October production of MACBETH.

The "Shakespeare Acting Workshop" will take a holistic approach, bringing into play the voice, body and emotions, all working together to bring the language and characters of Shakespeare to life. Through lecture, exercises, monologue and scene work, students will learn to integrate classical techniques into their own personal style, which will be natural to them and appropriate to Shakespeare. Those enrolling will attend a weekly class on Wednesdays from 6:30-10:30 p.m. as well as a Friday evening or Saturday afternoon session.

In addition to being a director, Dempsey is also a novelist, playwright, actor and instructor, who has worked throughout the country. He studied at Ohio State University, was a member of the prestigious Actors' Theatre of Louisville and received an Ohio Arts Council Fellowship for playwrighting. He trained in Shakespearean acting with the National Theatre of Great Britain's Acting Programme. Actor and former student, Barry Stillman, says this about the "Shakespeare Acting Workshop" : "Michael's workshop helped me to grow at ease with the language and the style, and helped me to realize how exciting performing classical theatre can be!"

The fee for the entire workshop is $85 per person. Enrollment is limited to 20 students. For registration and further information, contact the box office at (330) 788-8739.
