"The Dixie Swim Club" at CVLT is a tale of lifelong friendship
CHAGRIN FALLS, OH - Although Summer doesn't officially begin until June
21st, Chagrin Valley Little Theatre will be ahead of the calendar and
headed to the beach on June 4th, as it opens /The Dixie Swim Club/, a
heartwarming comedy about the power of friendship by Jessie Jones,
Nicholas Hope & Jamie Wooten. The play focuses on five Southern women
who met on their college swim team and have set aside a long weekend
every August to meet up at the same beach cottage on North Carolina's
Outer Banks to recharge their relationships. Free from their husbands,
children, and jobs, the ladies catch up, laugh and meddle in each
other's lives. /The Dixie Swim Club/ focuses on four of those weekends
and spans a period of thirty-three years, during which life flings
challenges at them, throws wrenches into their plans, and helps them
prove the enduring power of 'teamwork'.
Sheree (played by Jackie Cassara), the spunky team captain, desperately
tries to maintain her organized and 'perfect' life, and continues to be
the group's leader. Dinah (Chris White), the wise-cracking overachiever,
is a career dynamo, but her victories in the courtroom are in stark
contrast to the frustrations of her personal life. Lexie (Denise
Bernstein), the pampered and outspoken one, is determined to hold on to
her looks and youth as long as possible, and enjoys being married --
repeatedly. The self-deprecating and acerbic Vernadette (Kate Tonti),
acutely aware of the dark cloud that hovers over her life, has decided
to just give in and embrace the chaos. And sweet, eager-to-please Jeri
Neal (Jenny Barrett) experiences a late entry into motherhood that takes
them all by surprise.
The writing team behind /The Dixie Swim Club/ includes Jessie Jones,
co-author of the play /Dearly Departed/, which became the star-laden
2001 film /Kingdom Come/, Nicholas Hope, who has written award winning
plays and television episodes, and Jamie Wooten, who spent many years as
writer/producer for /The Golden Girls/. Under the direction of Chagrin
Valley Little Theatre veteran Barbara L. Rhoades, /The Dixie Swim Club/
is a poignant and surprising comedy that's sure to warm audiences'
hearts like a seaside holiday.
/The Dixie Swim Club/ is on stage at 8 PM, Fridays and Saturdays June 4
- 26, 2010. Tickets are $16 regular admission, $12 for students and
seniors. For tickets to all Chagrin Valley Little Theatre productions
and events, call 440-247-8955 (Mon-Sat, 1-6 PM) or visit www.CVLT.org
for online ticketing at no extra cost. Chagrin Valley Little Theatre is
located at the end of River Street (40 River Street) in downtown Chagrin
Falls, Ohio.
Coming to CVLT in July:/ Durang, Durang/ (comedy one-acts by Christopher
Durang), and the Ohio community theatre premiere of Mel Brooks' /The
Producers/.
Chagrin Valley Little Theatre is generously funded by Cuyahoga County
residents through Cuyahoga Arts and Culture. The Ohio Arts Council
helped fund Chagrin Valley Little Theatre with state tax dollars to
encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural
enrichment for all Ohioans.
