Juneteenth Celebration

JUNE 19, 2010

10:00 am - 5:30 pm

WHAT IS JUNETEENTH?

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of
slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that
the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at
Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were
now free.

The joy and jubilation of that day is now remembered and celebrated
throughout the country.

Today communities around the country come together on June 19th or
Juneteenth to recognize and celebrate the rights and freedoms we all share.
