2008 (Not Rated)  92 min.; Mexico/subtitles; Director: Mariana Chenillo;
Cast: Fernando Lujan, Cecilia Suarez, Ari Brickman, Silvia Mariscal

Nora is a woman who insists on having the upper hand, right to the
bitter end. She and Jose, her curmudgeonly ex-husband of 20 years, have
adjacent apartments so they can spy on each other via binoculars. An
observant Jew, Nora orchestrates her suicide right before Passover in a
manipulative flourish geared to annoy atheist Jose. But before she goes,
Nora prepares special foods for the Seder, lovingly sets the table and
places a large meat order. When she fails to open the door for the
deliveryman, Jose grudgingly lets him in. Along with Nora's lifeless
body, Jose discovers notes bearing instructions on containers in the
fridge, letters to various loved ones and a pot of freshly brewed
coffee. Soon the apartment fills with dysfunctional family members
coming to manage things and pay their respects. Determined to foil Nora
even in death, Jose mixes up the sticky notes on kitchen containers,
orders sausage pizza for his Jewish family, insults the rabbi, and
places an order for a Catholic burial. But one tiny detail has slipped
by Nora, and now Jose begins to see their lives in a new way. This
marvelous, bittersweet, amusing film from Mexico was a hit at the
Cleveland International Film Festival.

SAVIORS IN THE NIGHT
Friday, September 24, 2010 - 7:30 p.m.

2009 (Not Rated) 100 min.; Germany, France/subtitles; Director: Ludi
Boeken; Cast: Veronica Ferres, Armin Rohde, Margarita Broich

Siegmund "Menne" Spiegel first met Heinrich Aschoff and the other
Westphalian farmers as a teen in the trenches of World War I. There,
Menne became a decorated war hero for saving his comrades' lives. Now,
many years later, Menne is forced to seek out help from his "band of
brothers." It is 1943 and the night before he and his family -
beautiful, blond wife Marga and adorable daughter Karin - are sent to a
concentration camp. Marga and Karin take on their new name, Krone, and
assimilate into the family life with other refugees on Ashcoff's farm.
Menne, looking too conspicuously Jewish, hides out at nearby farms,
constantly hoping to catch a glimpse of his wife. But Ashcoff's teenage
daughter Anni is a member of the local Nazi Youth Group and has a
romantic attachment to the leader who has convinced her that she must do
her German duty and turn in any Jews. The Spiegels always seem one short
step away from discovery. Based on the memoir of the now 97-year-old
Marga Spiegel, this is a gripping story of the bonds formed by friends
and the complexities of family and politics.

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO
Friday, October 1, 2010 - 7:30 p.m.

2009  (Strong R rated for graphic sexual violence)  154 min.;
Sweden/subtitles; Director: Niels Arden Oplev; Cast: Lena Endre, Michael
Nyqvist, Noomi Rapace

Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on
the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was
never found, yet her beloved uncle is convinced it was murder and that
the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family.
He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the
tattooed and troubled but resourceful computer hacker Lisbeth Salander
to investigate. When the pair link Harriet's disappearance to a number
of murders from almost 40 years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and
appalling family history. But the Vangers are a secretive clan, and
Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are
prepared to go to protect themselves. Author Stieg Larsson, who died
suddenly in 2004, left behind three unpublished novels known as the
"Millennium" trilogy, which have become a global sensation, elevating
Larsson to the world's second best-selling author last year. THE GIRL
WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO is one of the decade's major literary success
stories, selling over 8,000,000 copies worldwide, and the film
adaptation is the highest grossing Swedish film in history. Noomi
Rapace's gripping performance makes THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO an
unforgettable viewing experience.
WARNING: Some scenes contain graphic violence.

THE WILD PARROTS OF TELEGRAPH HILL

2005(G) 83 min.; USA; Director: Judy Irving; Cast: Mark Bittner

An uncommon bond between man and nature is the focus of Judy Irving's
wonderful and informative documentary, THE WILD PARROTS OF TELEGRAPH
HILL. The film follows Mark Bittner, an unemployed and aging hippie, who
lives off the kindness of strangers in the a San Francisco neighborhood.
His life takes on new meaning when he starts feeding a flock of wild
Conures, a breed of parrot noted for its green body and cherry-red head.
Native to Argentina, the birds soon feel comfortable enough to feed
while perched all over Bittner. Being outcasts who yearn to remain free,
a mutual respect is born between Bittner and the birds. Daily routine
soon leads to growing crowds of curious passersby, as Bittner becomes
something of a local celebrity. Based on his up-close observations,
Bittner gains some keen insight into the behavior of individual birds,
giving them names. The resulting portraits of Connor, Mingus, Olive,
Pushkin, Picasso, Sophie, and Tupelo prove that these amazing creatures
deserve star credit in their own right.

2009 (Not Rated) 75 min.; Italy/subtitles; Director: Gianni Di
Gregorio; Cast: Gianni Di Gregorio, Alfonso Santagata, Mario Cali,

This international smash hit is an utterly charming tale of good food,
feisty ladies and unlikely friendships during a very Roman holiday.
Broke and armed with only a glass of wine and a wry sense of humor,
middle-aged Gianni (director and screenwriter Gianni Di Gregorio) is
forced to entertain his 93-year-old mother and three other lively women
in their ancient apartment during Italy's biggest summer holiday, Pranzo
di Ferragosto. Winner of prizes at international festivals including
Best First Film at Venice and the Satyajit Ray Award at London, plus the
Golden Snail at the Academy of Food and Film in Bologna, MID-AUGUST
LUNCH is both a warmly vibrant family drama and delicately balanced
comedy of manners.

THERE WILL BE A DISCUSSION SESSION AFTER THE FILM

2004  (Not Rated)  127 min.; Sweden/subtitles; Director: Kay Pollak;
Cast: Michael Nyqvist, Ingela Olsson, Frida Hallgren

Internationally famous conductor Daniel Dareus goes from being a big
fish in a big pond to being a big fish in a small pond when he returns
to his childhood village in search of peace and rest after being
stricken by ill health. But he stirs up painful memories and jealousies
when he takes on the role of choirmaster in the tiny community. The
choir is a platform for bringing characters together but also for
revealing the chasms within the village and within relationships. AS IT
IS IN HEAVEN was Sweden's entry to the 2005 Academy Awards and one of
the five final nominees for Best Foreign Language Film. It's a film that
covers all the bases: romance, eccentric characters, idyllic summer
romps through the rural Swedish countryside, spousal abuse, small town
hypocrisy, rebellion against an emotionally starved religious authority,
and finally a loving community healed by the power of music. This is a
film that achieved enormous popularity in Sweden and around the world,
including playing in the same Sydney, Australia, theater for two
straight years.

MOTHER AND CHILD
Friday, November 5, 2010 - 7:30 p.m.

THERE WILL BE A DISCUSSION SESSION AFTER THE FILM

2010 (R) 125 min.; USA; Director: Rodrigo Garcia; Cast: Annette Bening,
Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington, Jimmy Smits, Samuel L. Jackson

Three women's lives share a common core: they have all been profoundly
affected by adoption. Karen had a baby at 14, gave her up at birth, and
has been haunted ever since by the daughter she never knew. Elizabeth
grew up as an adopted child; she is a bright and ambitious lawyer, but a
flinty and vindictive lover in her personal life. Lucy is just embarking
with her husband on the adoption odyssey, looking for a baby to become
their own. Director Garcia has fashioned a deeply compelling story about
adoption that introduces us to three very different women who are all on
a journey of personal transformation. The screenplay marvelously
captures and conveys these complicated women's desires for love,
affection and nurturing. The three lead women's performances are
incredibly nuanced and authentically rich and believable.

GET LOW

2010 (PG-13) 102 min.; USA; Director: Aaron Schneider; Cast: Robert
Duvall, Bill Murray, Sissy Spacek, Lucas Black

For years, townsfolk have been terrified of the backwoods recluse known
as Felix Bush. People say he's done all manner of unspeakable things -
that he's killed in cold blood, that he's in league with the devil,
that he has strange powers - and they avoid him like the plague. Then
one day, Felix rides to town with a shotgun and a wad of cash, saying he
wants to buy a funeral. It's not your usual funeral for the dead Felix
wants. On the contrary, he wants a "living funeral," in which anyone who
had ever heard a story about him will come to tell it, while he takes it
all in. Sensing a big payday in the offing, fast-talking funeral home
owner Frank Quinn enlists his gentlemanly young apprentice, Buddy
Robinson, to win over Felix's business. Buddy is no stranger to Felix's
dark reputation, but what he discovers is that behind Felix's surreal
plan lies a very real and long-held secret that must get out. As the
funeral approaches, the mystery - which involves the widow Maddie
Darrow, the only person in town who ever got close to Felix, and the
Illinois preacher Charlie Jackson, who refuses to speak at his former
friend's funeral - only deepens. But on the big day, Felix is in no mood
to listen to other people spinning made-up anecdotes about him. This
time, he's the one who is going to do the telling about why he has been
hiding out in the woods.
