Dorian Wallace (b. November 17, 1985) is an American composer of modern and
avante-garde music, pianist, keyboardist, and teacher. Wallace writes
orchestral, chamber, big band, ballet, experimental, computer, rock, jazz,
electronic, and free improvisation. Wallace is Artistic Director and founder of
Trystero, a new music group based out of Kent, Ohio. He runs The Aeolian Art
Ensemble and The Dorian Wallace Big Band, two groups dedicated to playing his
music. He is also one of the founding members of the progressive rock fusion
band Apogee 13 and principal keyboardist in the 122nd US ARMY BAND.
As a teacher, Dorian brings many aspects to the table. He teaches many styles of
piano, from classical and jazz, to free improvisation and avante-garde
techniques, and rock and pop music. His knowledge of synthesizers, electronic
keyboard technique, and electronic music is dense. He also teaches composition
lessons and music theory. He is able to give traditional teaching for the
traditional student, but he is also quite capable of teaching in an unorthodox
manner for students of a less traditional mind.
He began playing piano at the age of 4 and writing classical music by the age of
7. Originally a self-taught composer and performer, he continued his studies at
Kent State University under Sebastian Birch, Pat Pace, Tom Janson, Frank Wiley,
and Chas Baker. He has had pieces performed and worked with such prestigious
artists as The Cleveland Orchestra Piano Trio, The Aeolian Art Ensemble,
TrioDance Collective, The Dorian Wallace Big Band, Emily Jeffries, Sharon Kriz,
and Bobby Selvaggio.
