Those in need of a good laugh can rest assured that's what they'll get when they buy a ticket to "Drinking Habits" opening this Friday at G. B. Community Theatre at the Ashtabula Arts Center.

Sisters Augusta and Philamena have been secretly making and selling wine for years to keep the doors of their small convent open. But when their wine suddenly wins an award, newspaper reporters arrive to begin searching for the vintners. As reporters Sally and Paul spy on the convent, Mother Superior catches them. Sally poses as the new nun Mother Superior was expecting, and Paul claims to be a visiting priest. But when local priest Father Chenille sees Paul, he suspects Rome has dispatched a new priest to replace him. And when the actual new nun, Sister Mary Catherine, does arrive, Mother Superior believes her to be a spy from Rome! Chaos ensues as, all the while, Augusta and Philamena try to secretly press more wine.

"Drinking Habits" is a fast-paced wine country farce with plenty of twists and turns. This script by Tom Smith, New Mexico State University Theater assistant professor, has won numerous awards and merits, including the Irving Award for Best Play in January 2006. The Irving Award, presented annually by the Eunice Players of Eunice, Louisiana, honors live stage productions of exceptional merit. Smith also won the Robert J. Pickering Award for the play.

"There are only eight actors in 'Drinking Habits,' so it's important everyone contribute to the hilarity," says Director Clay Nielsen of Madison. "Fortunately, I have eight very talented, funny people who have made directing this show a pleasure."

"Drinking Habits" will play on the G.B. Community Theatre stage for three weekends on October 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 22 and 23. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 8 p.m. The Sunday matinee begins at 2 p.m.

Walk-in, day of the show, box office tickets are $12 adults and $11 Seniors/Students. However, you can save $2 per ticket when you purchase tickets in advance. For tickets or more information call the Ashtabula Arts Center at (440) 964-3396.
