Wooster--- On Halloween weekend, the Wayne County Performing Arts Council (WaCPAC) will bring to life a holiday favorite,  The Legend of Sleepy Hollow  by Washington Irving. Performed as a Readers Theatre, local actors will tell the tale of Ichabod Crane and his ill-fated meeting with the Headless Horseman on October 29 and 30 at 7 p.m. and Oct. 31 at 2 p.m. at the chalet in Freedlander Park, at 400 Hillside Drive, in Wooster

Audiences who are familiar with the story through its depiction on the big screen by Walt Disney or Tim Burton are promised a fresh telling of this literary classic says Leslie Baus, the show’s director.

“This version is a little different from what people are used to seeing,” Baus said.

“First, Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman don’t appear as live characters, second, the actors will be reading from scripts while dressed in period costumes, and third there will be a sound effects crew that will be as entertaining as the actors” she added.

Baus describes the production as “ Legend of Sleepy Hollow”  meets “ A   Prairie Home Companion. ”

For the upcoming production, WaCPAC is using a script that was adapted for Readers Theatre by Mike Kolasky. Starring in the production are: Duane Acker, Robert Baab, Emily A. Curie, Ethan Hamilton , John F. Myers, Samantha Schabitzer, Bob Schang, Lois Speelman, Nathan Hoyle, and Jessica Tullar. Providing the sound effects are Bill Carter, Donald F. Curier, and Rachel Dugan Wood.

Sponsored by Apple Creek Bank and Wooster Glass and held in partnership with Wooster Department of Parks and Recreation, the performances are being dedicated to the memory of Lynn Drumm, who was one of WaCPAC’s founding members and its first president.   Following the performance there will be free cider and donuts.

Anyone coming in costume can enter the Best Costume contest, which is divided into age categories 10 and younger, 11 to 17, and 18 and older. Winners will receive a gift certificate to a local restaurant.

In conjunction with the show there is a Headless Horseman's Head Pumpkin Decorating Contest. The  Sleepy Hollow  cast will select a winner from each of the following age categories: 10 and younger, 11 to 17, and 18 and older. Each of the winning pumpkins will be used as the Headless Horseman’s head during a performance. Winners will also receive a gift certificate from one of the following businesses: The Bead Café, Pat Catan’s and JoAnn Fabrics.

Decorated pumpkins must be entered on Wed., Oct. 27, by dropping them off at the chalet in Freedlander Park, 400 Hillside Drive, in Wooster between 6 and 9 pm. All pumpkins that are entered will be displayed around the chalet during the performances and can be removed by the owner if it is wanted following the Sunday performance.

Pumpkin can be carved, painted or decorated in any fashion as long as it is suitable for a family environment and can be used as the head of the famous Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow.

Tickets for the performance are $5 and are available at the door. For more information call 330-466-6360.
