The Rodgers and Hammerstein classic *South Pacific* is based on the book *Tales
of the South Pacific* by James Michener which won a Pulitzer Prize in 1948.
The show opened on Broadway in 1949 with Mary Martin (*Peter Pan, Hello
Dolly, The Sound Of Music*) in the lead role as Ensign Nellie Forbush. The
current touring production has been adapted by the Lincoln Center Theater
and is directed by Bartlett Sher.

I was immediately drawn into the story before the first scene ended. The
setting is a small island in the (you guessed it), South Pacific Ocean
during World War II and the scenery and storytelling reflected this
immediately. The music is very authentic and the orchestra, conducted by
Lawrence Goldberg, was fantastic.
