“When a woman says she needs new shoes, what she really wants is a new job.
When she says she needs a new house, she wants a new husband. And when
she says she wants a new car, she wants a new life.”
Becky works at a car dealership processing paperwork and titles. Her husband
Joe is a roofer. Her son is a graduate student and still lives at home.
Becky has
a nice, normal, boring life. All of that changes when a millionaire walks
into the
dealership one night when Becky is working late.
Something Becky says to the millionaire leads him to think that Becky is a
widow.
All her attempts to correct his impression misfire. Becky soon finds herself
entangled in a double life. Visiting a beach front mansion one day and
having
pizza with her family the next.
What the Critics are Saying:
David Ritchey, West Side Leader
“Director Constance Thackaberry has done an excellent job helping the actors
develop interesting, sympathetic characters and keeping the timing of the
production moving at a fast pace. This is an excellent new script, well
directed
and well performed.”
Kerry Clawson, The Beacon Journal
“A number of crazy coincidences mount one on top of the other to add
surprise
upon surprise in this story. Dietz’s tale crosses over into the improbable,
but by
that time, we’re all strapped into this car for the long haul, eating up one
laugh
after another.”
Fran Heller, Cleveland Jewish News
“Paula Kline-Messner is a natural as the down-to-earth, dependable Becky.
Torn between devotion to husband Joe (Bob Keefe) and her attraction to the
eccentric and very rich Walter (Ric Goodwin), the good-natured Becky makes
the love triangle achingly funny and real. Tony Zanoni is a riot as Steve,
Becky’s
paranoid co-worker who obsesses about his wife’s death to anyone kind enough
to listen. Mark Leach is perfect as Becky’s live-in adult son Chris, a psych
grad
student with a penchant for labeling everyone’s behavior. Anne McEvoy gets
the
sarcasm just right as Ginger, an heiress who has fallen on hard times. Casey
Novak embellishes the sketchier role of Walter’s daughter and Chris’s love
interest Kenni Flood.”
Becky's New Car by playwright Steven Dietz asks the question: "If a
handsome millionaire thought your husband was dead, how much trouble
could you get into before he and your husband found out?"
