Class descriptions, information regarding BCA & instructions on back
side.
Beginner Jitterbug: This class will be an introduction to the most
well known form of swing dancing; the Jitterbug. This dance was made
famous in the 40s & 50s, but is still enjoyed today all across the
world. We will dance to all kinds of music from big band to blues to
early rock and roll. You will learn several basic foot work patterns,
how to connect with a partner and socially lead and follow a variety
of moves in open and closed position. There are many opportunities in
the Cleveland area to go out and dance and this is a great way to get
involved, meet people, and get some exercise too! Don't be afraid!
This dance is very easy and fun to learn!
Intermediate Jitterbug: If you can do a triple step basic while
holding a conversation; then congratulations, you have just been
promoted to intermediate Jitterbug! In this class we will work on some
fancier, flashier variations on moves you may already know, learn some
fun new moves, and tackle some interesting footwork patterns. We'll
also sharpen up your leading and following skills. Yep, all that in 5
weeks!
Beginning Lindy Hop: Lindy Hop is the original form of swing dancing
that began in the ballrooms of Harlem, NY in the late 20s/early 30s.
It is done in 8 counts rather than the Jitterbug's 6 and therefore
allows you to match the music much better. It is a bit more linear
versus the circular Jitterbug. The Lindy is a bit more difficult to
learn but oh so worth it! When you begin to master the swing out,
circle, inside turn, outside turn, RJ, and more....you will have a
sense of overwhelming euphoria and true connection to the music! For
examples of the Lindy think of the dance scenes in the movies “Swing
Kids” and “Malcolm X”.
Beginning Balboa: Balboa and Bal-Swing are dances that originated in
the crowded ballrooms of Southern California and were most popular in
the mid 30s. The Balboa is most loved for its fancy footwork, finesse,
subtleties, and ability to be done quite easily at fast tempos. Bal is
done with a closer torso-to-torso type connection and is the perfect
dance for working on leading and following body leads.
West Coast Swing: Partnered dance derived from Lindy with a little bit
of ballroomy feeling thrown in for good measure. It is characterized
by an elastic look that results from its' extension/compression
technique of connection. Sound familiar? :) It is danced primarily in
a slotted area. The dance allows both partners to improvise steps
while still dancing together. West Coast is danced to modern pop and R
& B music.
Intermediate Lindy Hop: We have lots of fun and interesting moves that
will help you improve your basic Lindy while adding to your toolbox of
moves. You will learn some alternate footwork patterns and also dive
into a bit of partnered Charleston as well.
Intermediate Balboa/Bal-Swing: Bal-Swing; with its open body
connection developed when the strict Balboa and California style swing
were combined. Bal-Swing and its bigger, flashier movements often
times got dancers kicked out of the ballrooms back in the day! Come
and be a rebel and learn the Balboa and Bal-Swing with us!
