Student Choreographers Join Professionals for Annual Spring Dance Concert
Performances to be held April 14, 16, and 17 at The College of Wooster’s Freedlander Theatre 

WOOSTER, Ohio — A talented group of choreographers from The College of Wooster will take the stage in Freedlander Theatre (329 E. University St.) April 14, 16, and 17 when the Department of Theatre and Dance presents its annual Spring Dance Concert. Performances will begin at 8:15 p.m. on Thursday (April 14) and Saturday (April 16), followed by a matinee at 2 p.m. on Sunday (April 17). Also that weekend, renowned performance artist Guillermo Gómez-Peña will present “Strange Democracy: The border wars,” a unique combination of embodied poetry, performance-activism, and theatricalizations of postcolonial theory, on Friday (April 15) at 8:15 p.m.



“It will be an entertaining and insightful collection of performances,” said Director Alyssa Lee Wilmot, visiting assistant dance professor and a 2000 Wooster graduate. “Our emphasis is on individual creative expression in contemporary dance. The concert is an excellent opportunity for young choreographers to share their works.”

Wilmot’s piece, “EMERGENCY EXIT,” showcases the talents of Wooster students and faculty. It features nine solos that investigate the human condition with a moving visual sculpture that connects to the dancers. “EMERGENCY EXIT” includes music by such artists as The Beatles, The Doors, Radiohead, and Sonic Youth, among others. Wilmot, who founded and directs group A, a professional dance company based in California for the past 10 years, received her MFA in choreography and performance from Mills College, and has appeared on stage at national and international venues.



In addition to Wilmot, seven students will debut their works, including Catherine Trainor, a senior from Oakland, Calif., whose dance was inspired by Fox Mulder’s quote, "Dreams are the answers to questions we haven't yet figured out how to ask." Her piece features an original composition by Jake Briggs, a 2010 College of Wooster graduate, which explores the idea that dreams are both connected to and separated from reality. The five dancers who will perform have reflected on a dream that was important or meaningful to them, and each one will be presented in a series of short vignettes.

Other choreographic works will be presented by sophomore Darius Dixson, whose piece highlights the life of artist Jean-Michel Basquiat; senior Lindsay Phillips, whose "Rambling" is described as “kinetic, loosely structured chaos;” and senior Nana Boamah-Acheampong, whose work, “Tuesday,” reflects regular interactions and non-interactions with people that we may or may not come across in our daily lives. Rounding out the list of student artists are senior Ellie Lawrence, junior Maria Cox, and sophomore Annie Woller.  

The costumes were designed by Charlene Gross, and the lighting was designed by students under the direction of Dale Seeds. The sound is coordinated by Chuck Findley, and the technical direction is provided by Jody Tidwell.  
Tickets are $9 for general admission and $6 for senior citizens and non-Wooster students. College of Wooster students are admitted free of charge.
