Dr. Frank C. Jacobs

presents

Johann Sebastian Bach's
powerful
"St. Matthew Passion"

Easter Weekend
Saturday, April 23, 2011
7:30 p.m.
E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall
The University of Akron

Bach's musical landmark will be presented in English by the Summit Choral Society's 80-voice Masterworks Chorale accompanied by a double Baroque orchestra made up of musicians primarily from the Akron Symphony. Guest artists will include Miriam Vogel, soprano; Ann Marie Wilcox-Daehn, alto; Timothy Culver, tenor; Todd Ranney portraying Jesus; and Randall Black (from Murray State University) singing the role of the Evangelist. The concert will also include advanced singers from the Summit Children's Choir Program. Bach's musical interpretation depicting the events of the final week of the life of Jesus connects with the soul, enhancing the emotional impact of this very poignant work.

The Kennedy Center writes, "Bach composed this extraordinary work for Good Friday, and may have performed it in Leipzig as early as April 11, 1727...The St. Matthew Passion is assuredly one of the greatest masterpieces ever composed in the history of music."

NPR Music writes, "Bach's Passion continues to move audiences more than 280 years after it was first heard in St. Thomas's Church in Leipzig, Germany. Standing as one of the pillars of Western sacred music, it is at once monumental and intimate, deeply sorrowful and powerful."
