Pride and Prejudice Opens on May 6

On May 6, 2011, Regency England comes to Canal Fulton when the Canal
Fulton Players at the UMC Family Theatre present Jane Austen’s Pride and
Prejudice. This story, which is adapted to the stage by Helen Jerome from
Ms. Austen’s novel , is about the love story between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth
Bennett during the first decade of the nineteenth century. The Samuel
French production will be presented in two acts on May 6-8 and 13-15, 2011 at
7:30 pm. It is produced by David Van Gaasbeek, who co-directs with Anita
Artzner. Ms. Artzner also serves as choreographer.
Elizabeth Allard stars as Elizabeth Bennett, the headstrong second
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bennett (Gary Liknes and Cindy Bagocius), who are the
owners of a small estate in Northern England. Mr. and Mrs. Bennett have five
daughters, Elizabeth, Jane (Sarah Price), Lydia (Emily Liknes), Mary (Emma
Canfield), and Kitty (Gracyn Loper). They have no sons and under the laws
of England, a woman cannot inherit real property. Thus, it is important
for at least one of the daughters to marry so the estate does not go to the
boorish Mr. Collins (Ray Olivera), who is Mr. Bennett’s only male heir.
Entering the picture are two very rich eligible young men. Mr. Bingley
(Josh Rowe) is looking for a wife and is deeply interested in one of the
Bennett girls. Mr. Darcy (David Derry) is alarmed when he sees that Bingley is
interested in marrying below his social status. Aided by Bingley’s
sister, Caroline (Kimberly Vinson), he sets out to prevent any nuptials from
occurring.
The rest of the story will require that you come to see Pride and
Prejudice on May 6-8 and 13-15. The play will be presented in the Fellowship Hall
Theatre at the United Methodist Church of Canal Fulton, 363 West Cherry
Street, Canal Fulton, Ohio. Admission is $8.00 for adults and $6.00 for
seniors and children under the age of twelve years. The doors open at 7:00 pm
and the curtain rises at 7:30 pm.
The remainder of the cast consists of Sandra Schmeltzer (Lady Catherine de
Bourgh), Kristi Liknes (Mrs. Gardner), Tyler Brewer (Mr. Wickham), Jason
Reagon (Fitzwilliam), Drew Hutchinson (the Young Man), Laurel Derry
(Charlotte Lucas), Sharon Burnley (Lady Lucas) and Jack Yoak (Hill).
